This is relative and depends on the person and taste, for you there could a lot of crap, poor and ugly filters, and for others there could be lots of interesting filters, it´s relative.
Would everybody have to make the filters according to your taste and make them very high quality and ONLY publish awesome filters ? |

![]() ![]() I thought I should just make a comment about that actually, it's just that there's really no forum thread and I don't really want to start one. So I'll say it here amongst the commentary for this filter. I've been working as an digital artist for several years now. I'm a generalist in various fields and I do a lot of work with various people fr om all sorts of backgrounds. I'm also a student studying art and otherwise. To a degree, I agree to the original commentary that was made regarding "not so great filters. The reason why I think they're "not so great" is because they often they may not follow the principles of design or otherwise just fall into a category of being "too simple" or "too specific" or "too much"" for production purposes. Designing a filter is a very sophisticated process that involves lots of time and thinking. Not only you're creating a work of art that can be "generated" you're making it so it works for you. Now the fun part about FilterForge is the user submitted library. And I absolutely love the stuff that's available online! ![]() The problem is that if you designed a filter that was made for specific usage, and you submit that to a library, it's now public, meaning you're granting access to the third-party to your work. That means that you have to design your filter so it makes sense to others, that it produces expected results and good, high quality results. This filter is absolutely a great example of that. It's results are stunning and provides a really good insight into what this program can do. But it's designed well so you can use it practically. Lastly the functionality produces what's expected of. A well structured filter will produce constant and expected results. THAT I think is very very important. Consistant results, good filter structure and design, idea, and the execution of the filter are things that strongly influence the end result. This is why this filter is a great example. It's kinda trivial, but it's got lots of potential for usage. When I'm designing a filter, I'm constantly looking at its outcome. I think about the render times and the parameters that control the final output. I practice design principles, keep an eye on detail and press the lim itations forward. I make sure the controls make sense and that they don't go whack mode just because I flip the values too high or too low. And that's why I partially agree. Now for the flip side. Not everybody does that. I like making filters and I like sharing them with people. I love seeing people make stuff with what I've created and that really really drives me forward to make new stuff. But of course, I can't apply that philosophy to every filter that's here. It's important to note that as much as we can follow the principles of design and follow ideal structures, we have to start somewhere. And it's really fun too when you start understanding how FilterForge works, you start to expand your ideas and start making new stuff. So yes, now this thread is kinda bit off topic but I wanted to at least express my concerns and stuff. I hope you understand ![]() ![]() |

Fantastic filter, examples above ROCKS!!!
(one idea: It would be even better if different images could be loaded on each frame, but I guess that would be complicated/tricky...maybe?)
Well written, Skybase! ![]() My feelings nd thoughts exactly! I think in FF library as 'goldmine'...where the 'gold' is very different concept to every single user. ![]() There's a huge diversity in the FF library universe of possibilities...and that's the greatest thing about it! (I wish I could elaborate more on that subject, but my english has its limitations) "From the moment we are born, we start being filtered..." |

On that note I'll say that most of the "crap storm" filters are from new users.
Your first few filters aren't exactly pure gold either. You were new too. And complaining about the filters that ARE submitted is a right reserved to those who actually SUBMIT filters. Your latest filters may be good, but they are far between. Sadly, it seems that most of the power users that can make exelent filters choose not to submit their filters on account of being too cool. That leaves the new users trying their best with little guidence. |

I've seen some very simple filters go up, and some even receiving editor's choice. What I try to remember is not every Filter Forge user has experience with image processing. And not every user can afford to buy more than the basic version. So what seems pointless to me (as a Photoshop user) could be very helpful and instructive to someone who is using Filter Forge at their primary tool.
I read here that some advanced users feel that submitting to the library has become déclassé. And that's unfortunate. I've seen some amazing filters that are well beyond my background or understanding. |
