soon all my bitmap-texture-libraries i use for common texturing tasks will be worthless smile:)

there just isn't any other photoshop plugin that could compare with the creativity of filterforge...

I have noticed an optical illusion with this filter whereby the image, will appear at times correctly and at time as an inverse where it takes on a puffy, bloated look with the cracks changing to holes and the peeling up changing to a beveling down into the holes.

I put the "featured" image up at my forum to get the opinion of other sign makers. these are the current poll results:

See only as it should be - Paint peeling up = 15 (16.85%)

See only as it should not be - Puffed up with holes = 49 (55.06%)

See both ways = 25 (28.09%)

thats interesting - I've always seen it as puffed up with holes, and I really had to try for long to see it in what you call the "right" mode (i.e. the peeling up mode).. but now I see it in two modes too, making this filter much more interesting smile:)

The "key" for me to see it differently were to focus at the upper inner part of the lifesaver, and then slowly move mmy eyes out from that spot (somewhere jsut above the rusty iron)..

if there is another more correct mode that this should be seen in, I'm sure it can be supported with some different shadows

i have a question on this one. it was recently updated in the downloads but it had vlad's name as the author but someone else was taking credit in the update description? so, what's the deal there? was the update done by vlad or this other person?
If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!

Mine reads as an expression of gratitude for the fix by Vladimir to Evgeny "Helionaut" Nikolskiy. But the fix was the addition of a transparent background. Both the old and the new one will shift from peeling to puffy. It is more obvious if you use a solid color as the image.

Ok, I'll post it here..

Vlad, feel free to use any of the mods I introduce - you use two perlins with almost same settings (only colors differ) - I changed that to one + a tonecurve and a linear curve that takes care of the color differences.

The filter adds global shadows as if the light comes from top left direction, so you need to ensure that the lightning settings have similar properties, otherwise it could have a negating effect.
The added shadows supports either the bulging way of seeing it, or the peeling way.. (maybe this is a left vs. right brained issue, i.e. which half dominates)

You could try changing the result mode to 'simple' and only use the diffuse surface input (from the blend) - it should look good too.

Thanks Sphinx ... unfortunately the illusion reappears very quickly. I am looking at it starting with a 3600 x 3600 white image at default settings. I could see it after about 5 seconds.

Try comparing two of the same rendering, one for each mode .. are they the same for you? For me I see what corresponds to the settings of that checkbox.

One of the first things I did. Once the peeling version turned puffy I switched to the other which seemed to have a light shift but was still puffy. I then switched back and it was still puffy.

Are you looking at it with an all white image? It happens with anything I've tried but is most readily apparent with the white.

Tried different images now and different presets.. it seems its very circumstantial how the effect appears.. dunno - but I know it has to do with the shadows and the lack of overflipping/bending out peels, which is very hard to do in FF smile:(

Throw an *invert* with a checkbox switch control just before the *height* input, and try it both ways, maybe one is "better" than the other for certain images ? Assuming it's a *surface* filter, I can't connect right now to check it out etc.

Now that FF has animation I just have thought that it would be really cool if there could be a way to animate this peeling paint effect and evolve from zero effect to much eroded and rusty image

Here is the modified filter. It's short so that I could get the animated gif under the 1 meg limit. You can modify it in the filter to change the FPS and number of frames to make any length and speed you would like. FF13.
