Welcome back Kraellin!!

This looks interesting and beautiful.

It looks like you could have you own mechanic from a car repair shop and you can drag along the ground your photo to pick up all the black oil that could be there smile;) smile:D

Well done for the effect.

I will see how this works.

This can be really useful and very interesting for modifying textures and making them more grungier as Carl have suggested well

Congratulations for making this filter

interesting idea, spaceray. i only played with it in modifying other pictures. never thought to try it out on other textures.

Please Kraellin, Could be possible to have this same filter BUT with a lighter version?

I mean one that makes the same beautiful dark textures BUT the dark and black does not invade so much and could be more brighter in some way the good effect.

I think it would be good if the blacks could have some more gradation of black shades and not be so solid, have more of those other beuatiful dark textures instead of so much solid black.

With this I am NOT saying that I do not like this filter and that it is bad, not at all, as I like it, BUT it would be ALSO GOOD to have another version with more light and brighter effect.

This the original example from this filter

This is this same above with Shadows and Highlights in Photoshop

From making some tests I have seen that the problem of the solid blacks comes when the filter find white or very light areas that are coverted nearly to black and if you make the white or light areas more dark the effect given by this filter is slightly better and not so much black.

Perhaps if this is true, this could probably have a way to separate the light and dark areas as Morgantao have made very well in his M_Shadows and Highlights and make the processing in two separate parts.

This is only a possible suggestion.

I forgot to say that I have used the 4 darken sliders and on some white and light photos reducing the darken makes the white parts burn in white and loose all the detail as it has happened in this Polar bear photo below

i added a 'minimum' control and another color control. the minimum will lighten and darken on a global basis and go way further than the other darken controls. and the new color control will turn the black to any color you want. i didnt want to put the color control in before because the idea was to make things look burnt. so, i may or may not submit this version as an update. but, give your public what they want smile:)

WOW!! You understood very well my idea and have made exactly what I wanted and what I was requesting, now is perfect for applying the amazing and impressive textured petrol and black oil darken effect in the AMOUNT you want and the intensity that you want according to the source image and the whites are better this way and like it much more.

Thanks very much for this very good update, now it is much more useful and interesting and have wider possible uses.

This is the possible negative (in some way) part of the update, I mean that I agree with you that this color control really is not very useful or interesting, because changing the black looses the awesome black effect, and with any other color than black is NOT the same effect, does not have at all the same impact and impressive effect than with black, even with grey opr dark grey is not good from my personal point of view.

You say that you want that it looks burnt, and although this could be a good interpretation and meaning of this filter effect, I personally see it much more like taking a bucket of black car oil and throw it at the image and then is goes through the edges very well and makes lots of beautiful and nice stains in the way.

SUGGESTION TO UPDATE ONLY WITH THE NEW MINIMUM SLIDER

I think that this would be a worthy update to put in the FF library but only updating with the new minimum slider and remove the color control for background

Also I would suggest that you could change the NOISE color control into another name that is more specific on what it really does, because this could be perhaps confusing to others thinking that if you put blue, the image result will be blue and this is not what it does.

i've updated the filter. it will show as 'charred 1c1' when it's uploaded. i overwrote the old name. i added in the global darkening control but limited its range with remapping. i removed the background color control, since i wanted to keep this black. i also removed a couple controls, since they werent doing hardly anything. the whole shld now be trimmer but more versatile. dont forget to use the variation and size/pixels controls within the gui. those will have an effect, too. the filter here in the forums can stay, if anyone wants to have that version instead. (no reason you cant have both, though smile:)
