Any comments would be helpful. It's a biggun, but I wanted to see if I could generate convincing 3D planets with FF. I will eventually have a cloud layer etc. I'm thinking clouds may end up as a different filter.

cheers,

Looks good... I like that hard edge you have where the land hits the sea.

Keep in mind though that, if you're going to wrap this around a sphere in 3D, you'll have find a way of spherically distorting the texture while keeping it seemless.
If you look at this image you'll see that everything towards the poles is stretched.
I've tried to accomplish it here (click the 3d example) but I got stuck in the end. I couldn't get a really good distortion (you'll see the poles still show hard edges) and when I tried another technique based on an aspect ratio of 2x1 (what most spherical textures are) the 1x1 preview started looking all stupid.

Kraellin,

Wasn't magrathea the planet of the lost planet builders in Hitchhiker's guide?

Even if it wasn't... I'm thinking 'name of a mythical planet'

hehe

Sjeiti,

Yeah,I'm aware of the projection issue. I'm going to blend the poles to pure white, plus distort the center a little to make the poles stretch to the middle a bit. One of my CDROM projects was one called 'map projections of the world' I just wish I could steal the math from one of the 60+ projections and input it into FF, though I'm hoping a curve will do for this fake world.

smile:)
