i just submitted a new filter, "Sunsets V', so it wont be ready to download yet, but i did save out some images from its use. this filter divides a landscape picture between the sky and ground and then alters the sky portion to create a new look.
this filter gave me fits trying to get it right and i'm not sure it is quite yet. it's also one that if we get more control components i will update. in fact, i'd appreciate any of the math gurus around here to look at this filter and tell me how it could have been done better. the hard part wasnt in separating out the sky from the ground, but in putting them back together again without the sky or the ground ending up semi-transparent. that's where i had the most difficulty. if you have two halves of an image, split in an earlier process and both have alpha channel transparencies, but on different halves, putting them back together again with no transparencies showing through was a trick. blend wanted to blend the transparent part as well as the opaque part. i did manage to work it out, but i just thought there shld be a better way. anyways, here's the first rendition. craig ![]() If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!

Kraellin,
I LOVE it! What happens if the horizon line is lower or higher? Does the new effect bleed into the other part of the picture? Donna |

the division of the sunset from the ground is found within the filter and thus set automatically by the picture itself. try it on a different landscape and you'll see.
it's not 100% perfect and may not work on all landscapes, especially if the luminosity is very close between sky and ground, but it shld work on most. just adjust the two threshhold sliders to get it how you want it. craig If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!

it shld also add reflections to water on the 'ground' side. though, that may need even more adjustment to work right. i've had pretty good success so far testing it on a variety of images, with and without water in the image.
if you want to test it now and not wait for the filter to come up in the download, i'm attaching it here. craig Sunsets V.ffxml If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!

At the risk of sounding like a dumb-bell, I don't know what to do with the ffxml in order to use it. Could you enlighten me? Thanks, Donna |

Hi Donna,
If you have right-clicked and 'saved as...', It will be a xml file, so, rename the extension to ffxml. If you've just clicked on the link and opened that in your browser and you saw that huge code, just save It from your browser with File/Save as... Don't forget to keep as ffxml extension. Now close your Filter Forge and click twice on the file to open up FF and this file will be in your 'My Filters'. I hope that helps. Cheers. |

![]() donna, if you're using firefox or mozilla, right click on the file and 'save link target as'. this shld open up a save dialog box. you'll have to browse to the filter forge 'my filters' folder which is found in C:\documents and settings\<your Windows account name>\application data\filter forge\my filters . save it to there and then open up FF and it shld be listed in the 'my filters' menu/folder. craig If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!

Thank you, Lucato!
Indeed it did help. ![]() I love this filter...here's a pic I shot on the 'riverwalk' near my house last January. The top pic is the original; ugly chunk of cloud in the sky, the bottom one was run through the Sunsets V filter, courtesy of Kraellin. Much nicer photo, wouldn't you agree? Donna ![]() |

excellent, donna; i love it! (the riverwalk one)
i have found one image so far that i have that the filter didnt work on very well. i'm hoping someone can explain a better way to blend those separate alpha channels so i can adjust this filter a bit. i've been playing around with other alpha channel applications, but i'm still running into this same problem. craig If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!
