I imagine eclipsed planets/moons have been done already, but I didn't really look it up, I just made one for fun since there's no new 'Earl' on tonight I guess. smile:dead:

Crapa - That one's cheating and using HDRI lighting. smile:p

Sjeiti - Hey now ! I think that scientist had a special camera, it never looked like that when I saw it. smile:D

Kraellin - I was just messing around with a glowing circle, and thought why not stick a planet in the middle, like an eclipse. And both those exampe pics they posted = cool, and could be their own eclipse filters. smile:)

----I dunno how most of ya'll decide what filters to work on, but I usually jst open the editor and start wiring stuff up til it either looks kinda cool, or until I actually get an idea ha-ha. I was just bummed that 'Earl' isn't on Thursdays anymore, so I tried to make something that actually sorta looks like something, instead of my usual weird patterns and colored shapes (well, actually I already admitted it was just a colored 'glowing circle' to start with, til I got an idea ha-ha).

pretty much the same. i go both ways. sometimes just start with a blank slate and start fiddlin and sometimes have a specific in mind before i open FF. the trouble isnt starting; the trouble is in finishing smile:)

----That's probably fairly average then, as far as a standard approach to filter making. Some people might lean one way or the other, as long as ya don't try to tell me that all 4,000 of the filters in the library were specifically planned to be as they were when the filter maker sat down at the computer ha-ha smile:p Personally, I've thought up a filter then sat down and made it maybe 6-7 times ever. Those were cool, and made me feel pretty sharp, but they were rare things indeed. It really usually is just open the editor and start doing something until it goes somewhere or doesn't suck ha-ha.

This is cool!!! smile8)

My first variant thoughts were to hack and mod part of Dilla's "Swiss Cheese" filter to create a lunar surface.....or create a Saturn-like ring around it..... smile:)

----Hmm, I used Chaffs & Perlin Noise for the surface, ya might just swap the Chaffs for Cells and get instantly round craters, I dunno. I'll take a look at it some more tonight or tomorrow and submit it next week, since I looked and didn't really see a 'stoopid fake 2-D eclipse' filter in the library already ha-ha. smile:D

I messed with it a bit more. The overall "eclipse" look is just kind as good as it gets with my skills really, but I did make a switch so you can do an asteroid too ha-ha, if ya like colored space rocks. Examples below.

jffe, I really think you are onto something here.....you could very well emulate the Hubble Telescope pics of galaxies and such..... smile:devil:

Totally cool!!! smile8)

----The hubble pics look that bad ?! Wow, more tax money wasted etc. I kind of like the neon-ish asteroids, although they are kinda blurry, not much I can do about that without losing other aspects of the look yet. And, now with the asteroids and whatnot, the render is slowed down some, it was like 4 seconds. smile:cry:

New proper sized/non-pixellated examples. 2 of the eclipse with *cluster* setting on the stars, and 2 asteroid ones.

I tried to do something else around the edge of the planet/moon/eclipse, but all I could get was this. I think I may have reached my tolerance limit on this one ha-ha.

----I erased them to make room, and because, I finally (yeah yeah, a year and a half later ha-ha) totally solved my little problem with posting pics that looked worse than my renders. The above examples are straight renders at 75% with the color box unchecked. Long story, since I post my example pics through Andale and not through FF here, but 600X600 = not the right size, it'll shrink them then and somehow adds pixelation and/or artifacts. The above pics look exactly as they do when I rendered them, because I finally checked, and saw the *correct* size (correct so that the FF forums don't screw'em up) is 526X526. Told ya, long story ha-ha. smile:p

----It's owned by Vendio now I guess http://www.vendio.com/ I just use the 3megs a month pic hosting for $3, it's useful for ebay because you can assign the pics to auctions by number, and it does thumbnail/enlarge pics. Other than that, you can just post a jpg url in forums like this, and post pics at their full size (or whatever the forum allows).
