The idea with all these is that the underlying geometry is very small and simple, (in the examples above, they're little all pretty basic sweeps and little <100 poly box shapes) and all the detail could come from a few maps using displacement.

Very cool indeed....

I wish I could do 3D. What did you use to render those cool images? ...

Thanks for all the encouragement! If you make something cool using this filter, please post it. I'd love to see what other people are doing with it.

I'm using Vue 6 infinite for my primary rendering app lately. The geometry is just rough shapes coming out of zbrush, or simple primitives right in.

I've been trying to get into Cinema4D, which comes highly recommended by my german 3d artist friends. I'm pretty sure that C4D does displacement materials, but I don't know for sure. (C4D also has a save-enabled demo, btw.)

Cool, I like vue 6, mind isn't version 7 in the pipe line? Stumbled across Vue 6 recently still got to save up to buy it yet.
Nothing wrong with a little insanity ;)

Yes, they announced Vue 7 at siggraph, evidently. I don't know much about what it offers yet. But if the jump from 5-6 is any indication, it could be something major.

Okay, I looked it up. Here's the text from one of their press releases.

More Robust, Seamless Integration with the Leading DCC Solutions

Vue 7 xStream, e-on’s flagship solution, represents a totally new paradigm in terms of integration and workflow. All Vue tools are now fully integrated in the host application, providing direct access to the most advanced 3D environment creation technologies (including EcoSystem Painting). Users of Autodesk 3ds Max and Maya, Softimage XSI, Maxon Cinema 4D and Newtek LightWave will greatly benefit from Vue xStream’s unprecedented and unmatched 3D Digital Nature creation power!

Next Generation Features

Capitalizing on breakthrough technologies introduced in previous versions, Vue 7 will also feature a number of important new features such as the 3rd generation of e-on’s patented EcoSystem ™ technology, as well as Spectral 2 atmospheric engine, SolidGrowth 4 HD, a completely new indoor Radiosity engine and much more.

So it looks like incremental improvements pretty much across the board, focusing on direct integration w/ the dominant 3d apps.

Hi Aegean,

The material setup depends on what application you are using, so unless you're using Vue6 infinite, it wouldn't help you anyhow.

However, it's not that hard to make your own: you just render each map (diffuse, bump, spec, and 'emissive/glow') and plug them into it's appropriate material slot in your 3d application. (Your application must be able to do displacement mapping to get all the cool offsets.)

If you render stuff up using the Spacehulk filter, please post it. I'd love to see what people are doing with it.

Pretty much an emulation of what has already been shown using simple models and the displacement (not as good as what has already been shown here) - he's something I'm playing with atm.
