Well, that warning should be enough to keep this thread safe enough from early exposure.

It even requires a secret password, that only you know, to post on this thread.

For here comes the supersecret "3D Landscape" filter WIP.

---

What all does it take to make a 3D landscape?

A number of the elements exist in separate filters and others will have to be created newly. There are skies, clouds, water, the sun, even flat land in perspective that have been done in some form or another.

But there is at least one missing element of the plan: Textured, mountaineous ground surface in perspective.

So here we go, for the first time ever... Flat land "bumpernized" into rocky mounds. The test texture, since Christmas is starting to get closer, is icy snow (or something similar).

(Hey -- where's the snowman?!)

oh, i see what you're going for. i had thought from previous conversations, that you wanted something more distant. thus, i fooled around with the "Aqua Blu" filter and came up with a simple mountain shapes thing to start. very crude. i'll attach it, nonetheless.

in fact, i think i'll make a couple posts here and attach several filters that might have some passing interest to this.

i think it was lucato that made and published the original "landscape" filter. i think byRo made a version also. there were several versions of this and i'm not sure who all made what. but i'll post what i have.

i know these are a bit far afield of what you may be doing now, but perhaps they'll be of use. here's one more i did based off lucato's original.

so, that being done, what's your current vision for this? is the image you posted pretty much how you want to go or is that just a preliminary to prime the pump?

That one is the first attempt, I want to be able to make it look like mountains coming from the ground, right now it is just a bumpy, shapeless blob. The shape should obviously be more triangular and have a slope to it. And would need a few of them one behind the other to give it more depth. Should be able to be composed somewhat seamlessly together with the flat land with texture continuing from one to the other.

Gotta also decide what all should be there. At least, I would say:

-Clouds
-Water
-Ground plane
-Mountains

Other possibilities:

-Rivers
-Roads
-Vegetation -- Trees? Sounds scary-slow, but maybe there is a way to make something simple that would look fine as a part of the whole.

-Sun/Moon/Stars -- I don't know if day and night should be in the same one. They could be, it's mostly a matter of lighting. This is where Betis SkyGen would be good. And/or your stormy clouds.

It could easily become a monster filter, so gotta be a bit selective about how many things to put there, but with that we could get pretty far.

Anything essential missing?

Oh yes, some possible weather conditions. Storm could use rain. That would make puddles on the ground, too.

Cool, ThreeDee! This will be very useful. As minimum for environment in 3D projects.
Anyway, I hope so. Will the planned version be working with non-square images?

P.S.

Looked at the various lanscapes you attached. Yes, that Lucato/ByRo landscape is kinda in the direction. Just going for something more realistic with proper perspective, plus the ability to have some closer-up objects as well.

The mountains at the horizon in the last one are good. Could throw them in the background just as they are.

Another useful element for realism:

-Fog/haze

Non-square... Hmm. I'll see if I can make it that way without some major headache. (I usually don't bother as it is easy enough to render a square of the larger dimension and crop it afterwards.)

Yes, I was thinking that this might be useful for instance for creating new reflection environments. Or backdrops.

It might be too ambitious to try and make it randomization-friendly, but if I can, I will.

PS. Snowman. Heh! That's a snowkitteh.
