While experimenting again with the swirls I wondered how they would look as a texture for a picture frame..I am done with it except for some more presets and info..
Heres the first preset..
Now to think of a name.. smile:)

They look kind of umm, Narnia or Harry Potter, some kind of fantasy type thing. "Storybook Picture Frame" maybe ? Or "Fairy Tale Picture Frame" ? Hopefully that's not too far from what you saw them as, it's not meant to make fun of them eh, just saying what they kinda look like to me. smile:)

I always like the different veiws on the filters and how they are perceived. Sometimes they also give me a different direction on where to go with a filter smile;)

One more thing about this filter thats a whole lot different than the other one I made is there is a lot less controls. A whole lot easier to create the frames. smile:)

Thanks Kraellin. I was going back to my frame moulding cutting days for these. Spent a lot of time to close to some of the mouldings. Also glad to see you got the computer back up and running again. How many times is that now? smile:D

CF, i havent seen this filter posted yet...or maybe i just havent looked in the right place.

i also took your beaded frame filter and modified it a tiny bit. i like to run in stand-alone mode and wanted to see images within the frame. your filter doesnt allow this. it only shows the black background. so, i altered your slightly.

here's an image from it:

the picture is from PatriciaKay from retouchpro.dot... posted with her permission.

Thanks Kraellin,
When you compare these with my Playing Cards filter you can see that they are a little
more tame as far as components. That one has a lot to it but everything works well together.

CF,

i went ahead and altered the new one to also allow imports to show. this one took a little more tweaking due to where you had your final frame component. i had to add another frame component at the end of your tree and plug your stuff into that. i also added a brightness/contrast component to my portion of it to allow the image to be altered in case you wanted to alter the frame in brightness/contrast, but not the imported image. the ONLY thing i added to your work in the main body was one control component on a kaleidoscope component to give more variation in the patterns. i called this simply 'pattern changer'.

i tried to keep additional controls at a minimim as to not clutter things up too much. i could have added a whole gamut of things to the import side for tweaking the imported image, but that just seemed inappropriate to this filter, since it's all about the frames. i also tried adding controls to the surface lighting but that didnt have a decent result either, so i removed them again. oh, and i did add two controls to the frame component i added so that you could add some inside contrasting and corners if desired.

and again, i'm not submitting this to the library. this is just a personal tweak thing because of the way i use filter forge and i'm not trying to upstage you or anything. i really like this filter and expect to be using it for my work so i just wanted to have it like i normally use this type of filter. so, thank you for posting this. great filter!

Hmm, I do like the more variations in the patterns. I was going to update the filter with a lot more presets and the option of having the image show within the frame.
Maybe I'll have to use your idea of another "pattern changer" sort of thing smile:)
Anyway just glad you like it and find it useful. Post some pictures of the frames
you make, it would be cool to see what kind of frames you are maaking with it. smile:D

CF, well, i re-found the one big limiter on these that i dont like... the square limit. i guess that's all part of the seamless thing. it makes making a retangular image lose the pattern from all those kaleidoscope and other components that force seamless, square imaging. well, i suppose it doesnt lose them, per se; it simply stops at the square end and picks up a new start. i do wish there was an option to turn off seamless in those components. not all of us are making textures only.

i found a way around your profile gradients, but couldnt get around the kaleidoscopes. so, i end up with non-symetrical frame patterns when i play around with some of the components in your filter. a shame, really. i really dont understand this fixed condition. why cant it be an option? seamless or not seamless.

oh well, maybe in version 2.

at any rate, i can even more appreciate what you've done in light of the seamless limit. but for me, i'm probably going to leave your filter go for now. i did find a couple ways to enhance the pattern without changing it and that was one thing i think would be nice in your filter, bringing out and enhancing the pattern more. some of your presets were quite cool but i wanted to see the pattern more, bring it out more.

and yes, you've got a ton of options you could do for changing and adding more patterns there. the big problem is keeping the controls under control. i could have added 20 more controls with no problem at all smile:)

Yep 20 controls would mean a whole lot more options but..That would be a problem of sorts. I have been working on a sorta workaround but not a perfect fix thou. Heres a pict of the work-flow. If you want to try it out.

If choose the Frame Component and deselect Proportional and Fixed Size that somewhat takes care of the weird frame at the top and sides.
Then inbetween the Cells and Blend component connect an Offset component
with the sliders attached so you can move the pattern around, so you can at least adjust its position on the frame..I will put this in as an update in the first one.

That limit drives me nuts sometimes also...

That one is looking cool so far. Are you blending that pattern into the frame? Almost could be a texture for the frame and then art under some frosted glass.

CF,

i'll try and upload it today and then post it here also so you can look at it. i'm still working on the refraction part and may just leave it for now. i didnt really want to refract the image all that much. i wanted to refract just the frame. so, i'll need to change a couple things yet. the problem is i keep finding new, interesting things smile:)

i love this frame component. very versatile!

CF,

ok, i submitted the filter. so, here's the version without the 20 preset limit and some of the control names are the same, the dividers i use to group the controls.

----That'd be wild, to have the frame 3-D above the picture, but then melt/twist/drip/tendril/etc. (height and color-wise) down into the picture from all various angles. There's "Fantasy Frames" for sure and 3 fractions. smile:D

That would be kind of a cool one. Maybe have the picture moulded into the twists and turns of the frame so it looks like part of the frame.

Well I have put in the changes to the second version, still working on the patterns. Kinda going back and forth on that part on what looks best.

Kraellin: I also use FF in stand alone so I put in some of your ideas in no2.
With a checkbox to turn the image off and on and a somewhat quick gamma adjuster.

Heres a pict..Its one of my photos so no requirements on that photo.

ah, you fixed the square limit thing. i'm guessing you used the offset here to do that. good idea.

i've also been playing with mine and incorporated that offset in at least one leg of mine also. definitely helps. i'd still like the non-seamless, though.

it looks like you also added more contrast to the framing. that's good. the patterns in the first were just a bit subdued and i kept trying to tweak that part up a bit. what'd you use there?
