((I know another paint filter)). ((With a twist though)). smile:D

I made this for digital scrapbooking and wanted to share with new friends. Here's a peak.

It's called "Paints Old Barn Siding". I didn't add tons of sliders so that beginners would feel comfortable using it with one click. And I know the advanced users will have no problem manipulating it as a layer in their paint programs or even using it on top of other filters.

((I hope you like)).

Oh before I forget~ The image has a gloss of Ron Viers Lab Enhance (the first default preset). Mostly I use Ron's or Vlad's image enhancers- so if you have a filter you've made that is a great for this please do post the name of it to me. I will use it.

P.S. The flower is from last years yard and grown from seed. This year we had a bad frost so I'll be using last years flower photos for another year it looks like. Unless weed photos work smile:cry:

and on the critique side, is there any way to speed it up without losing the quality/texture?

Hi Kraellin, Hi SteveJ,

[Oh man you both would not believe what happened yesterday. Have you seen those 'dropped call' commercials. Well I was posting to Kraellin in this thread and my Internet service was shut off ((hubby didn't pay the bill))~ he took care of it yesterday and Wha-La back on today. We are house poor so sometimes... stuff happens. smile:cry: (House poor is when your mortgage and taxes eat you alive- kinda like the movie Jaws but the banker and tax man take turns playing the shark. And that's with a cheap house- nothing fancy and built in the 70's.)]

The good news is I was working offline on this filter and have an update for it.

(((Thanks guys for the compliments!~)))

It does have a serious two min load problem. And two min waiting on a computer is excruciating. I did take out one component and only lost slight paint color manipulation. ((Can hardly tell)). Then added a small map for hue and saturation to make the paint color pop a bit more. ((It needed it)).

Some of my filters are fast loaders some medium and this one is a long 2 minutes. I may dissect it some more (by copying the elements to a blank canvas) before sending the update in later today. But I have already updated it and it's better but still slow. When I get it copied over to a new canvas I will go thru every inch of it to see if I can't rip some of the heavier components off to minimize load speed. Obviously it's going to take some time to put it thru more tests.

I need the filter for my scrap booking and figured if I need it; others might want it too. I'm so glad you guys like it.

Don't know if you layer filters but I've been doing that for years (I call it filter painting). This filter varnishes well with Ron's Viers Lab Enhance- also goes great with a filter I made yesterday that is not loaded yet- Find Edges (may rename before loading to the Gallery- the filter is a simple cross between Flaming Pears, Glare, Mr. Contrast and Organic Edges- simple filter really). When applied on the wood it enhances the grain and roughs it up just a tad while enhancing a subtle surreal feel to the image.

Sorry about the long posts (I type too fast).

What I forgot to mention about this filter prior to the updates that it still does:

#1 If you use a blank integrated canvas size of solid white, the filter will produce a solid wood grain that matches the wood grain in your painted image.

#2 On the images and on a solid white background it will produce horizontal and vertical wood grains. (The control was poorly named (my bad) and I've renamed it on the update.

(Also updated this information to show in the 'About' area.

I'll be working on minimizing the long wait before the update later today. Wish me luck~ LOL.

Personally, I hate working on my slow ones because all my time is spent waiting for renders. I usually will not use a filter if it takes too long to render a 600 x 600.....because it will take forever to test to find what I want and render larger images.....unless the effect is worth the wait smile:)

Vlad wrote this.....which might be helpful towards increasing speed.....

1. SLOWEST: Image-based components (Blur, Motion Blur, Sharpen and High Pass) with any slow component (like Worley-based noise) as a source.

2. SLOW: Worley-based noises (any Noise except Perlin, which is very fast).

3. SLOW: Image-based components (see above) in general, because they need to prepare a source bitmap before rendering themselves.

4. CAN BE SLOW: Refraction, especially with a slow component as a source. Refraction takes 3 samples of the source input.

5. CAN BE SLOW: Any Noise (or any component based on Noise such as Noise Gradient, Noise Distortion or Noise Curve) with high Detail and Roughness (they are interdependent) especially with a custom curve as a profile.

6. CAN BE SLOW: Any Noise with a custom curve as a profile -- the curve is sampled once for each noise octave (for Details = 10 you have 10 samples of the curve per one noise sample).

5. CAN BE SLOW IN CERTAIN CASES: Any component that generates edges for anti-aliasing (Patterns, Worley noises, some of the adjustments). But since anti-aliasing is done in a separate pass, that shouldn't impact speed too much.

6. FAST: Patterns, Channels, Adjustments, Gradients (except for Noise gradient).

7. ULTRA-FAST: Externals (Image and Selection), Checker, Switch, Blend, Offset.

well, since steve posted vlad's note on speed, i'll just say that i swapped out one of the 'cell's or 'chaff's...i think it was chaffs, for a perlin noise and did the best i could to duplicate what you had in the chaffs. it's pretty close.

also, one thing not in those notes that vlad posted later is, the more stuff you have behind a refraction component, the longer it takes. so, you've got several bottlenecks in there. but, i wouldnt compromise the look for speed.

Exactly~ You are soooo right!!!! Now 600 x 600 is the size for a scrapbooking template. I usually save 500 x 500 seamless tiling effects as page fills for later use... then I don't have to wait on effects. For smaller tiling I use 200 x 200 to save for later use. Perfer 500 x 500 though. Unless of course the effect is for a non tiling image.

Unfortunately I do need this filter for my scrap booking and it also renders matching solid wood grain panels- I did go in and enhance the settings with the Hue and Saturation Map- figured if I'm going to have to wait it better be worth it. *grin*

Oh and I love that Vlad made that guide- I have read that previously and pull from the knowledge in it (not all my filters are slow turtles like this one, LOL). I don't think it's the slowest turtle out there...but it's a slow one.

That's the main reason I don't think it will do too well for popularity but there will be a few like myself that need it for personal projects.

Hey Kraellin,

(((((( TY on the refraction component tip )))))) and also the swap to perlin noise~

I've said it before I'll say it again ... You two are pure genius.

Oh, I didn't mean that your filter wasn't worth it smile:) I was talking about the ones that are really slow.....you know, the ones that you wait forever to render while Final Jeopardy music plays in the background and you fall asleep in your chair.....the ones that make yours seem like a rocket in comparison smile:) Most are exceptional works, but they suck my will to live having to wait so long for them with every little adjustment smile:)

I think that it can still get popular because seasoned users understand and tolerate the wait. Like I said, there are many that are much slower than yours and they got popular irregardless of their speed smile:)

LOL StevieJ~ No I know you weren't saying that smile:)

You know if the filter is loading like a .pfm or .exr then nothing is worth that for a filter application. LOL ((Read the thread on that one- created .hdr files- took to another program - then to another and ended up with a nice .pfm ---- now that was a wait. Went to load the thing... ARGH.

Or if you have to apply the filter at night then go to sleep to let it finish.

Scrap bookers and graphics gals I think would love the filter... ((I like it)) but... ((looks around)) I think I'm the only woman who posts in the forum (?) and there must be other women using FF??? Not so sure this is a "man's" filter (know what I mean). LOL I should have called it "Estrogen Paint Filter".

I thought that too~ Usually on the Internet it's fairly hard to talk to people our same age. I was digging a few songs off the new Marilyn Manson cd this weekend, the new Linkin Park did nothing for me though, only one track is "heavier" than the middle of the road rawk radio single that's out, it's a freakin' ballad album. The Knack ? Is that the "My Sharono" or whatever song ? The name seems almost vaguely familiar from the 80's. I don't really remember much about 80's stuff, cept everyone used Yamaha DX7's on everything, and too much reverb (yes, Phil Collins, I'm talking about you), and buttrock/glam metal ruled the airwaves for about half the 80's (men looking like women, yes, I'm talking about you).

Hi jffe~

Well for those of us in our 20's in the 80's there was a prelude to the music you are referring to and this prior music is the stuff we liked the best-----> most of us. Which leaves the 80's music more popular with the new generation... don't' get me wrong it was 'okay' when the 80's music came out but it wasn't near as good as the music we'd grown up with. I believe the 80's music was spurred on by a fitness craze as the 80's music was played quite a bit in Aerobic classes. Music for an Aerobic class is picked for the beats per min of the song---> weird little fact is that your heart will try to steady itself with the song beats... typcially the prefered beats per min for a class is 138 or around there and... that's 80's music. And of course the songs for the most part had to be upbeat and fun... and wha la the songs became popular. So when you get a bunch of 40 year olds talking about music,,, it's the prior music that we remember as our favorites. For most. LOL To put it simply... Madonna (a fitness crave spurred Artist verses... Lynard Skynard... no contest. smile:D

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/My_Sharona Beleive that album was prior to the one listed below (The one listed below I think is their best album).

The Knack (Album Title-----> Serious Fun) You might be too young to remember these...

Well both good bands, well technically "The Knack and The Silver Bullet Band"..Then Bob Seager....They are both related to "Michigan" Bob Seager in Ann Arbor and Doug Feigers brother is a big lawyer here....Althou I don't know if Doug feiger grew up in Michigan...

My favorite LP from them was "Get The Knack"...A Lot of off time and not standard 4/4 time most of the time...So its an interesting one....

But myself I have grown up on music from the 60s, 70s 80s, 90s, from the 1800s to the 16 century..So I just like music...Good and Bad...Unless its real bad..
