yes, i'm not real happy with the vertical banding either. it was originally just a quick way to introduce color. it still works that way but it's got some quirks now too. you can, currently, eliminate the banding by simply picking colors more closely relateed to each other, but yeah, i'll keep working on it smile:)

yeah, van gogh is toughie. i can get a few decent strokes, that if i squint real hard i can sort of make look like van gogh smile:) hafta keep workin on that one also. so, i'm glad to hear you have one too. seems an inevitable step in the life of a filter maker smile:)

well, thought i'd put some more time in on van gogh. had to change quite a few things. it's still a long ways off and certainly no van Gogh maker yet, but some progress has been made.

hehe, no; not really. it's not forgotten, though. i really do want to do one. i've studied a bit more of his work but duplicating those strokes in FF using an imported image is a bit tricky. so, it's currently sitting on the sidelines while i investigate some other things...some of which is related.

and good to see you back, carl smile:)

Hey Craig, I was missing the 'good old days' with you and the rest of the FF old-timers gang..... smile:)

I have a question for you......remember when you had created HDRI images from my "ExtremeGlass" filter??? I was wondering how you did that......because I've just started learning about them.....and it would be something to be able to create high dynamic range HDRIs from FF......

hi steve,

and welcome home smile:)

umm, actually, no, i dont remember that. got a link? i do recall trying to simulate hdri in a filter but i never got it quite good enough.

i can tell you rougly how hdri is done. you take 3 pictures of the same shot, one at normal exposure, one about a half step over-exposed and another about a half step under-exposed. you then take all three into a program that does hdri and tone mapping. this takes bits of the normal, high and low exposed images and combines them into hdri. the tone mapping lets you further adjust the image with some, what looks to be basically, curves type adjustments.

but, refresh my memory a bit more and i'll help you out if i can. i have tried making some myself, but the camera i currently use doesnt really do good exposure separations or bracketing shots. and i also do have one program for doing hdri, which can be done on the 3 exposures or kind of fake it by using only 1 shot.

as for the program, it's an open source one: http://qtpfsgui.sourceforge.net/ . at least, i think that's it smile:) i've got my hand in way too many pots and i keep forgetting this and that.

I started out as a Civil Engineer......moved over to Structural Engineering.....got into architectural/landscape design.....then went back to school for two more degrees in Fine Art Photography and CADD.....so I'm basically an engineer/designer/artist jack-of-all-trades..... smile;) smile:)

About two years ago I started doing fine art sculptures with steel framework, lead-free solder, glass, semi-precious gems, translucent minerals, etc.....alot of kiln work, welding, and soldering. Most of the work is soldering because I use it to cover entire pieces in a silver liquid metal texture using a 300 watt industial soldering iron.....which is seriously time-consuming.....but reflected in the asking prices..... smile;) smile:D

I used to be into music as well.....but now I only occasionally play around with rifs on my keyboard.....

Sounds very interesting.....jffe mentioned that he was doing something like that as well as others here. I'm not up to date on all the neat new things that can be done with music nowadays.....but I'm sure you have some really cool stuff going on..... smile:)

well, compared to what you're doing, i'm a lazy, armchair bum with a little mock audio-visual studio. lol. but, it's kinda fun. i'm tempted to write up a blog thing on all this over on retouchpro. i'll let you know if i do.

Okay.....not a great pic of it, but here's one of my smaller works that's made to be mounted/hung in a window.....it's about three quarters of the way done.....still needs alot of fine-tuning on the curves and texture flow blending.....currently covered in alot of flux and residues.....but it will really "bling" once I have it finished, cleaned, and polished..... smile:eek:

i've been tweaking the waterfall filter. it was never quite right... fun, but not quite right in the head. i've mostly been limiting the controls so that a random button push doesnt take an hour to figure out how to get something legible again smile:) it's essentially the same filter, though; just more limits on controls and a couple of other tweaks.

i also have a version two, which completely changes the background, but that will have to wait smile;)

here's a shot from the update:

the water and down pour look excellent, reflection cool, mist atmospheric, not so keen on background and it's probly a dream - casading over rocks breaking the direct straight flow - pretty hard to do agreed smile:eek: smile:)

hi carl,

the background is the one thing that's really changed in version II. for now, this sort of abstract jungle will have to do. it does have quite a few variations, but i agree, they were not my favorite either.

i've also changed this back to a simple rather than a surface filter. the height stuff just messes me up too much with this one.

there are still a couple rough spots i'd like to iron out, but i shld be re-submitting this one.

Glad you guys like it..... smile:)

Sorry about the poor quality pic......was kinda in a rush.....but it is actually perfectly square..... smile:|

It's 2' x 2' x 3/4"......welded steel rod sub-structure.....all filled over/in with lead-free solder that is 7% silver.....which gives it the "bling" after it is polished up......

I should have taken it with backlighting so you could see how the translucent materials really "pop out" in a window.....maybe I'll take another pic of it like that when I get the chance......

oh, that's smaller than i thought. i was thinking in the range of 6" to 12". but, cool smile:) and if that's the unpolished state, then i'd love to see it in its finished state!

Sorry, it is larger.....it's 2 foot by 2 foot.....but is one of my smallest works.....most are much larger, stand-alone sculptures.....built to be near a light source or to have one placed in the center of the base......
