Excited by geekatplays galaxy, thought i'd try my own hand at this. Since the Milky Way (us) is a barred spiral galaxy, so here's an early proto. May go somewhere or not, not easy work...

This is very cool and nice, great idea and like it, I did not though that the distorted echo mask could be used in that way with abstract lines, so is good to know.

Some intense math... and here's a Cairo tile using pentagons within hexagons, this particular tile is also symmetrical in x & y, so it's seamless.

David, sent you an email with a document I found that explains the math behind the mappings, and there are a lot of them.
Here is another example, using a different mapping and showing a square image made circular.

Cool and good idea, it is interesting to see this kind of things and is creative, like it.

One idea I thought after seeing this, is that can be used as heptagonal tiling (or also hexagonal) and joining together a lot of different heptagonal tiling, each one of them with a different source image, it would look like a bee hive full of images

Here's another example of Pinched Hexagons, squashed to make it square and tiled. Notice that the hex tiles are seamless in the Y axis, but not the X axis.
