thanks, carl. on that rough vs smooth, i've been playing with noise, kaleidoscopes and contrasting, to give an idea of how that came about... oh, and elevation gradients; they can do the most unexpected things at times.

I think it actually seem to be flash stuffing up the flash player in turn stuffing up the registry - do you know to fix the registry?
What does the original pic look like for the black glass filter just curious how it is effecting original image

here's the original, carl. mind you, on that image above, i think i used a doctored rendition before using the black glass filter, but the doctored one would only have added a bit of brightness and contrast, if i remember rightly. so, this one, the original, isnt too far off what i used.
as for your registry problem, there are reg fixers out there, even free ones, but i dont have one that i use or trust, yet. it's one of those programs that you want to be SURE you have the right tool for. i'd go to one of those sites where they deal with nothing but computer problems and ask around.
you can also try the old tried and true method of simply uninstalling and reinstalling. that will sometimes set the reg straight. If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!

I like the effect in the last sample.....but I would suggest posterizing/cleaning it up a bit so that the original is more recognizable..... Steve

ok, i had a look at the filter again. i cant really do exactly what you want without losing the glass effect quite a bit, but i can tone it down some by reducing the refraction.
and the other thing that happened in playing with this filter is i came up with a new look that i wasnt expecting or looking for that i thought was pretty cool. am posting that pic. If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!

I think that does look better.....objects are more defined.....
If you're still experimenting with this.....I would suggest trying a little pre-posterization of the external image before everything else.....to remove alot of the details that refraction is using to "mess it up".....while keeping the major object forms..... Steve

hi steve,
thanks for the input
i was sick as a dog for 3 days over the weekend and my computer broke down also... lost the boot drive. so, i'm just barely back up with a new drive and new installation of windows, so hardly anything installed back yet. dont even have all my drivers installed yet. so, it's going to be a while before i get back to everything.
and yes, i'm fine now. the sickness was just one of those three day stomach/intestinal viruses that basically turns your innards to jelly for a while... not a lot of fun. but, fine now
so, i'll be checking in while i get things going again. just dont expect a lot of output for a bit If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!

Hey Craig, glad to hear that you are feeling better!!!
Bummer on the crash.....no HD clone/ISO, eh???
Don't you have a second external HD??? You could use that to clone your primary HD, eh???
I just saw an advertisement from a company that is offering complete backup/restore of your HD online for something like $4.99/month as well.....
Did you have everything backed up.....like all your filter work, etc??? Steve

hi steve,
no, no iso. i guess i dont understand isos. i thought the hardware layer of windows prevented an iso from working if it went to different hardware? i thought an iso only worked if it could restore it on the same harddrive, not on a new one. that was my impression and is probably why i've not used iso backups before. and no, no clone of the hdd either. the c: drive just quit working, probably due to bad bearings of the motor, since i did hear some chatter just before it died. so, feel free to correct me if isos can transfer across drives, especially the c: drive to another drive.
so, i'm in the re-installation process of all the crap one has to have to run windows and be on the net. great fun! (he said sarcastically).
i do have a very recent full backup of all my filters. i just have to re-install FF again before i can use them. that stuff was all on the c: drive. If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!

Hey......well, it doesn't sound good if your HD was making those sounds before it quit.....usually means that your HD is corrupt and done.....but I could be wrong.....
Yes, you can create an ISO/clone of your HD and restore it from your external HD.....widely used method nowadays.....due to being much easier than reloading and resetting everything......royal pain in the arse.....believe me, I know..... Steve

yep, the hdd is fried, physically. i bought a new one, slightly larger and got most of the basic stuff back on already, windows, windows service packs and updates, zone alarm, avg, winpatrol and a couple others. when i get filter forge, photoshop and paint shop pro back on here, i'll probably make a baseline iso and restore point for all that.
i've also been talking to my computer guru brother about isos and he cleared up one misunderstood i had about them. i had always figured that if you made an iso of any registry item, like windows itself, that you could only restore that iso to that exact same physical hdd due to the windows hardware security layer. he tells me that isnt the case for hdd's; that the worst that shld happen in that case is that you'd have to reactivate/reauthorize windows. but, that if you had to replace the motherboard, it would be very unlikely your old iso would work on the new mobo because there'd be just too many changes to contend with in the hardware.
so, what i'll probably do is make that baseline iso when i've got all the basics back and then make regular iso's on a monthly basis, perhaps, to be able to use these as sort of physical restore points. i may also do a daily or weekly incremental backup using Ghost.
but i'll tell you, i came --> <-- that close to buying a mac two days ago! i sat in the store for an hour talking to the sales guy about almost nothing but their macs. man, there are some sweet features to that thing. there's also some drawbacks, like the closed architecture of the hardware, but boy, i was sure tempted! well, things are moving along. i've got all basic security restored and all basic graphic editing restored, including FF and some of my previous filter. i got those from a different save location than the cd i most recently saved as backup. so, one more cd to go on that restore but things are coming along fairly well. i've also put Ghost back on and accessed some old backups on an external drive. i'll be adding that routing back in as part of my backup system. so, i'm almost back in business what a pain in the ass!

hi carl
ya know, i dont really know what it stands for, but it basically means a snapshot 'image' of a storage device or area of that device, that one saves to a location, on or off the computer, that can be restored if something goes wrong with that part of the storage device. at least, that's what i came to understand it as. i couldnt find an online dictionary definition just now, so i might have the name wrong, but 'image' is right. it's basically a backup image. i think it's probably in a compressed form, also. here's a wiktionary.org definition in part: Quote |
---|
A copy of all or part of a disk drive retained for backup or replication purposes; |
i've got FF restored now as best i can. took a while to put all those filters back on and seems like i've lost about a month's work. my last full backup was november 9th, 2008. i thought i'd done one later than that, but apparently not. i may still be able to recover the full amount from the dead drive. the drive platter shld still be intact. it's just a matter of getting the electronics or motor to work well enough to make one last clone off of it. wish me luck on that one

That is cool.....maybe could use the concept in conjunction with Dilla's recent mosaic pavement filter.....but with your Kaleido pattern concept.....
.....but be careful.....Dilla might go into convulsions if the Kaleidoscope component touches one of his filters..... LOL.... Steve
