This one is sort of rebel cruiser - like. I think it's the apparent little red bits of detail. Next version, I'll get much more in the way of paint.

#8 This is the most recent one... although I like it the least. Think I'm going to roll back to the previous version.

More refinement of my Gas Giant texture (which uses ThreeDee's awesome rotateable orb snippet. Shading and whatnot is actually from photoshop, not FF (hence the bit of banding).

i like the first three planets, but that fourth looks off a bit in shape. that extra lighting arc makes it looks a bit convex there and i dont get that ring on the last one. but overall, cool smile:)

The 'ring' banding is an artifact of the photoshop gradient that I quickly slapped over to provide some quickie shading. It's not actually in the FF output.

Here's another one, showing the pure flat color, with no annoying Photoshop gradient:

Mmm. Planetary traveler. Looking nice.

(Shading idea: "One Lunation" has the type of shading mask you can put right over the image map to render the planet with one side in shadow in FF. Or, you can get a similar result from just a plain gradient multiplied onto it. Meaning onto the flat map before it is wrapped around the sphere. Although I figure you already figured that out.)

TD

PS. In case you didn't see it, I made you that hex-based building placement thing -- over at the Off The Deep End -thread.

Oh, I know how to do it, I just don't need it. The project I'm making this for doesn't require shading in the image itself. Maybe will add it later when I release the filter.

That's clever putting it on the pre-sphereized map, though. I was thinking about trying to make it a surface filter, that way I could get more detail of depth into the clouds, maybe. (I'd just do an RGB extract on, then use that to ever so slightly adjust the sphere height map.)

Here's some other stuff I've been working on: a new version of my Spacehulk filter. Am rebuilding it essentially from scratch. Have made a number of major changes:
a) Heightmap is now broken into 3 parts, inspired by ThreeDee's boolean snippet. This makes the it look less like a noise pattern, and more like something which has been constructed.
b) Pipes! There's lots and lots of pipes. (I figured out a good fast way to make them.)
c) Cleaning up the blends, replacing w/ thresholds. This version is actually faster than the old one, despite all stuff going on.

Check it out:

This one shows the multiple noise segments pretty well. There is also a 'Paint' control, which you can see zig-zaging all over the one above. Still need to add lights. Not sure how that will work yet. This is the same filter as the one above.

Older version. Didn't have the hull plating texture working yet, but still looks cool. You can sort of see how the pipes work.

#4 This is an older one, before I figured out how to separate out the pipes in the color channel. (Props to TheeDee for his boolean snippet!)

The gas giant one is essentially done, but I'm probably not going to add much detail beyond what is already there. Maybe just the shadow. The terrestrial planet one I didn't get very far with, but I plan to come back to eventually.

Yeah, number #1 really has a super-macross feel to it. I think it's the color scheme, and the rounded shapes. Actually, with the pipes and detail etc. they all have a kind of 80's-90's anime feel, IMHO. Which is cool.

Not yet. I probably won't get to it before the new year, but soon. I want to add lights to it, which, was fairly complicated last time.

If you'd like, 'dilla, I could email you the filter as-is to play around with. I'd appreciate any feedback you might have.

Sure, go ahead. I'd definitely like to take a look at it. Of course, you could also post it here if you're going to submit it to the library anyway... smile;) smile:D

Ok, I'll shoot you an email later. It's a bit messy still, I'd want to clean it up before posting.
