One of those "filters" again! Oh noes! Actually this is rather something I'm going to be printing out huge. I rendered these images out 7000X5000 px. Highly detailed, extremely colorful, hopefully the big prints come out nicely. Printed resolution would be 59.28 X 42.34 cm (or 23.34 X 16.67 in) HUGE! Just imagine printing this on a big canvas paper. Kinda excited.

On the technical side these sort of filters already exist. I think this one just excessively becomes detailed than the rest. It uses 5 blocks generator layered on top of each other so that they mix into 3 layers: top, middle, bottom. The bottom layer is the super fractal small sizes and you can guess how the rest goes.

This filter was more of an experiment with colors. Perception of colors differs based on the intensity of the details, in other words, you would see the image to be more "crazy" when you see bright colors and concentrated detail.

While the color selection method on this filter is simple, it possesses another psychological roll in "ideal colors." What I mean is that the filter has thresholds on the hue range, which clearly helps the look and feel of the filter itself.

Of course the point here is that it's rendered huge for gallery purposes. I'm wondering what exactly will happen when I stand in front of a large, chaotic picture with vivid colors.

The exhibition will be in Japan after I come back from the US smile;)

Here's another.

Too bad it loses detail from compression. The real thing is super crisp.

And a variation. This one's just flat. Personally I expect some odd reaction from the audience. The images will be (instead of being displayed in a row) it'll be surrounding you. You'll go into a tiny room with these prints on the walls. Who knows, some people don't like tiny places. smile;)

COLOR HARMONIES ARE SUPER IMPORTANT!!! In any given time, we are bombarded by color harmonies and variations of them.

Well today I met a client who just didn't understand all of this, so I thought I'd make a "learning tool" for finding combination of colors that work well with each other. I'm still trying to figure ways to make it easier and understand able.

But the basic idea is that you choose 1 color, and you go from there instead of choosing multiple.

sometimes this tool lets you blatantly know what ugly colors ... are smile:D

Too bad I'm running into the "hue wheel" problem. I will figure a better way than doing that. But for now that's just my "proof of concept"

My friend loves to draw manga. She's damn good at drawing but she just can't draw detailed backgrounds. So I did some FF work smile;)

I bet stuff like this already exists, but whatever. It's fun.

Hey skybase,

Cool manga filter! FWIW, I was messing around w/ a filter to make similar high-contrast linework + limited posterized color. Sort of like Vlad's comic book filter.
One of the things I found to work pretty well is to pull out the various channels, (using extract RGB, or Extract HSL nodes) then hit them with a high pass to find the high contrast edges. Works pretty good, actually, particularly w/ the Red channel. (Hope that makes sense.)

I personally think it's a good way to do it smile:) Although once we have "edge detection" it would be much more interesting as to what we could do. I honestly like the highpass-threshold technique better because it leaves some ambiguity making it feel rather human than computer generated. As of now, I personally think there's a wealth of "outlining" filters, although I'll upload it to the library anyway. I personally think it's a good place for backup as well smile:)

Meanwhile... I was playing a classic 2.5-D Shooter called Marathon Durandal and Infinity. It's been over 10 years since that game was first released but the texture work still inspires me to make interesting looks and styles.

Here's the wiki article regarding this material.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marathon_(video_game)
... Link feature doesn't seem to be working well, so just copy and paste it.

After the 3rd edition of Marathon, Bungie released two editors for custom level and character design as well physics and sound. This allowed people to create their own "scenarios" or mods which can be downloaded and played as an add on to the original game itself.

One of the most beautiful, most massive scenario as far as I know is Marathon Rubicon, released in 2001. The texture work was extremely gorgeous, crisp, and beyond the original artwork. The level design is incredible and massive as well and the textures go very well with it.

Marathon Rubicon can now be downloaded at: http://www.marathonrubicon.com/

Anyway, we live in 2009 and it's been a long long time since these games came into existence. So I thought I'd just go back, look at some great examples of techno-texture work. I imagined doing all of them in FilterForge.

As a start... here's a simple circuit wall.

Another one just for the fun of it. I would probably be able to "import" these into the actual 2.5D old-skool game. Yay Modern tools for old stuff! smile:D

As of now, Marathon Trilogy is fully available online. The website isn't "official" although I think it's much more relevant and modern:
http://source.bungie.org/get/

Just look at all the texture work. So much possibility even in 2009. smile:)

Skybase has run into a BIG WALL!

We'll call this the FilterForge Wall. I just can't come up with ANYthing to do. While LAB 3105 is in operation I haven't come to anything decent. I see textures everywhere and anywhere I look. I make them, but I never feel the same satisfaction as I did with the rest of the stuff I've made so far.

The difference is that I'm trying to not only just generate "good looking stuff" but more of art itself. (??) give me a second of humor.

def Ideas ()

for i in range (1, 900, 2):
i = skybase + filterforge
print (i)

Ideas ()

syntax error filterforge is not defined. Skybase is not defined.

SHOOT.

ok well that's not going to loop and add ideas to Skybase. nop. no way.

For one thing, the way I'm ever satisfied is when I generate something that's actually more than just a texture. Not just some sort of texture generator or a image effect that results in something boring as a cartoon, sketch, random distortions, crap... I just basically think that there's so much more that can be done to an image that it's tough to come up with something super original and useful at the same time. Of course, in my realm (since I work with Maya) FilterForge is a wonderful helper tool.

But hey... I don't plainly think of it like that. It's NOT just a helper tool, it's like... a 80% complete graphics package that's missing some vital features like iteration (looping algorithms), internal selection utilities, why not erosion, macros... so on and so forth. The point being that regardless of it's actual selling point (a Photoshop Plugin that makes Plugins) it can be more on its own.

</rant>

Get back to work Skybase.

ahhh..Are you trying to take me back there? smile:D smile:) Spent many nights playing this game and making maps for it....There was another game that was based on the Marathon
Engine and that was Damage Incorporated...This was during the second marathon....There were some editors that others made on that DI CD....A Friend sold her original Marathon Box set on ebay years ago for about 80.00......
Still got mine thou... smile;) smile:)
But one thing and I'll get out of your thread...Looking at some of the Durandal art you can see that in the first Halo game... smile;) smile:)

Any way cool ideal thou...I was thinking of this at one time but time is what I did not have...

Even thou its not official this is where I downloaded the trilogy and the other scenarios along with (Recommended) Aleph-one...This allows one to play on OSX (ppc/intel) and Linux also....So I can fully say good stuff to find there... smile;) smile:)

On the second line of graphics and to the left...It says "Aleph-One" then has a windows version..This takes you to SourceForge for the direct download...After downloading read the read mes and Installs since one still needs to install SDLs for it to work.....But I Did send you some mail Craig for easier set-up.. smile;) smile:)
