You cross the bridge over Cow Key Channel, turn right on highway 1 which becomes Roosevelt Road, and just past the row of big high priced hotels you see the gulf waters through this screen of tall palm trees. If you are like me, from the Midwest, you turn and say, “Toto, I don’t think we are in Kansas anymore.†In the Keys, the farther South you go the farther from the south you get. One hundred miles from the Florida mainland and you might as well be in another country. You are in the Islands, mon. That is the message that this row of trees always gives to me. I can forget the real world from this point on.

I wanted this image to be a kind of dream view of a kind of fantasy world place. I kept things simple and ran my Fake Buzz filter with only the simplify controls used, no outline. This gives the image an impressionist feel with reduced detail, but with a dreamy other worldly effect. I guess that is how I feel about the place.

I really like Lipebianc’s “Sketch My Pic Up†filter. It is really good on simpler pictures with low detail. With busier photos the effect gets lost a bit. But then I use filters different than they were intended most of the time. I wanted a surreal fantasy look. I ran my Old Book Illustrator with outline turned off to get a poster simplified look. I layered the Sketch My Pic Up over that and flattened in a multiply mode. I upped the saturation and screen lightened. I did some color correction to bring the green out. This is similar to what I try to do with my own outline type filters with a different feel in the resulting image. I like it.

Great stuff you have here, Gene!
![]() I've played with some of your filters and had much fun with them! Fake Buzz is great ("Palms" example on this page is excellent!). I play a lot with Old Book Illustrator and Sloppy Paint Brush, some of my favourites! ![]() Thank you for comments related to my sketch filter, I'm still working on it. If its useful for you to create cool art like the Dinosaur World above and even more, then I'm very happy! ![]() "From the moment we are born, we start being filtered..." |

I don't use other folk's filters much, but I find that your sketch filter adds a new twist to my own filters. You will be getting some usage points from me for sure. I think the FF folks should select your filter as a featured filter. Only 5 filters submitted and already a real winner!!!! |

I have found that Lipebianc’s Sketch My Pic Up filter can be used with several of my simplify style filters to change the feel of the overall effect. I used two layers with the the big mouth dude, with my Fake Buzz (outline turned off) filter on the bottom and Sketch My Pic Up on top. I multiplied the two together and saturated it up a bit. The result is a more ominous creature, and a concrete statue looking more scary real. I don’t often use other peoples filters much, but this is a filter that I wish I had come up with. I keep finding new ways to use it to improve images, and I’m not really using it as it was intended to be used. That is the cool thing about FF.

Two seven mile bridges. The new one on the left and the old one on the right. In the Keys they don't bother tearing down old bridges. They just use them to fish off of and film movies on. Arnold pulled Jamie Lee out of the car crashing off the end of the destroyed section from a helicopter. The movie people did not really blow it up. They just used the section that got blown up when the tanker truck exploded back in 1982.

Sometimes I actually plan an image. Great stuff happens often by accident, but this time I had an idea of how I wanted the finished image to look. In my wasted youth I loved the music of CCR. This is my take on “Bad Moon Rising†Two layers again. In the top one I used my HDR Color Control and on the bottom I used my Multi-style Carve. I combined with a 65% layer exclusion mode. I then upped the saturation and did a multiply darken. The sky is on fire and it could be the end of the world. I like the way there is a selective emboss in the water and part of the sky. The image becomes very stark with multiple areas of interest. This is one time when the exclusion mode works perfectly to create a foreboding feeling in the work.

Just to punch things up a bit I ran my HDR Color Contrast filter on it. It boost the color and detail. I ran my Color Grain Paint filter and faded it to about 34% to improve contrast. It's not anything too radical, but it does make the image jump like I like them to.

It was a bright day up North, so the photo was a little washed out. I wanted to add some detail and darken it a bit. I ran my Old Book Illustrator on the image and I did a multiply layer darken. To kick it up a bit I added some extra saturation. The image turned out pretty good. It does not show up too well in this downsized jpg, but the outlining in the filter really intensified the detail.

This last week I uploaded a couple of new filters. It has been awhile, I have been working on multiple projects and falling behind on filter making. One of the projects is adding new designs to my Tiki mask section in my t-shirt shop. Those two filters were designed specifically to aid me in creating those Tikis. This panel style mask has a nice copper color, but I wanted more.

I first applied my Paint By Number Poster filter. I did this because I wanted a few more subtle colors in the image. The Paint By Number filter can be used to add new colors and a poster effect at the same time because it controls color levels in individual channels. I then used my Soft Crosshatch filter to both soften the poster effect and add some texture. I faded the effect by 40%. To add some more colors I layered two versions of Lipebianc's Sketch My Pic Up filter, one purple and one black. I then ran my Texture Board Paint filter to give the image a carved wood look. I used my Hammered Metal filter to make the surface rougher and make the cracked wood finish look deeper. In Photoshop I did some touch-up brush work to lighten and darken different areas. Man that was a lot of work, but it was worth it. I think it looks like the real thing.

I wanted this to look like an illustration with lots of color and detail. I have designed a couple of different filters that aim for that look. I used my Pseudo-HDR Illustrator filter on this photo. One filter was all I needed to get this clean colorful image.

A simple way to make an image look different from a photo is to take away some detail and add a little texture. I ran my HDR Color Contrast filter to pop out the color. Filter forge can produce great texture effects and there are really good material type texture filters all over the library. I would love to use some of them more, but they have a couple of problems. Because they are created with a surface output they cannot be layered behind an image and they run so so slow. I use the old fashioned offset node in simple output filters and multiply blend texture with the image. It does so much to the resulting image. I have made a number of those type of filters, but have only uploaded a couple of them to the library because they are all basically variations of the same filter. So if you use one of them, just go in and change the noise type or some of the noise settings and you got more textures. I used my Gesso Board filter and much of the detail was obscured. Kinda nice if you like that kind of thing.

Sometimes I make a filter that really isn't much good for anything. I experimented with this and similar filters for quite awhile. I liked them, but they did not seem to improve images or make them look cool. But, some filters just need the right image to do it's magic on. I tried a number of filter effects on this image and just couldn't find one that excited me. Then I ran my Foggy Edges filter on it and WOW. It turned winter into a fantasy place of dreams. Winter is better as a dream than as reality.

I've been kinda obsessed with Tiki culture lately. I added a Tiki section to my t-shirt shop and I wanted my Tiki designs to look like the real thing. I have been hanging at the Tiki Central web site where all the Tiki gurus hang out. (They are mostly from California as expected) I have been digital carving to try to mimic wood sculptures. This is my latest. It is the Tiki War God.

The Tiki itself was a bit of an experiment using some filters I have been working on that I haven't uploaded yet. I don't usually do that because I want to show examples that others can use if they are interested. I was just fooling a bit, using the image to experiment and I came up with the polished wood look for the mean little guy. I'm not even sure what I did, but I saved it. It is the background that I love most. I started with Saylee's Handmade Paper filter to get a nice random color and texture look. I added a really faded back version of my Hammered Metal filter to gives some rough emboss to the back. I really like Ronviers' Cracks Stencil filter. It is an easy way to give a surface an ancient worn look. I did about 3 repeats of that filter to add some really interesting aging to the image. I finished it off with Kraelin's Frosty Morning Windows frame filter. Cool, it looks like my funky Tiki is hanging on a huge stone tile in some just discovered jungle temple.

Thanks much Lipebianc .... I mentioned on that last Tiki that I didn't remember just what filters I used, but I should have mentioned I used your Sketch My Pic Up filter as an overlay on it. I use it on almost all of my Tikis. I like the way it seems to deepens the carved look and gives an aged feel to the image. If you look at the face, you can see how your filter better defines the features. That was one fine filter you came up with.
I think my t-shirt stuff looks better since I started using FF. Thanks for checking it out....... Gene |

I used two layers again. On the bottom I ran my Super Color Poster filter. Lots of new colors and strange shapes. On the top layer I ran my Old Book Illustrator filter with the saturation turned to monochrome. I combined with multiply mode. Then I upped the saturation a bit. I still like the original, but this one is kinda cool too.

Just wanted to make the image a little stronger. The background was a little busy and Mr Tom here didn't stand out enough. I ran Lipebianc's Sketch My Pic Up filter on an upper layer and did a 71% luminosity combine. I did a high pass sharpen and kinda over saturated the result. I multiply darkened a bit as well. I think it helps the overall Image.

Craig ... You are probably right about the turkey, but it was a really odd bird. Nobody raises them around here and it was with a bunch of wild ones. He seemed to be the leader of the pack. I'd nerver seen one like it before. We have lots of wild ones around here. They roost in the trees in the woods across the road. They gobble at me when I get the paper in the morning ..... Gene

It has been some time since I posted in this thread. As I have mentioned before, I have a bit of an attention span problem. I'm easily distracted, kinda like a dog with a squirrel. My squirrel was an Ipad. I have been playing with many of the drawing apps on it. I'm not much of and artist, but I enjoy drawing simple cartoons, especially faces. I try to create cartoons with the fewest lines possible while still producing images with strong expression. This is a simple drawing with a little color and shading added.

I haven't uploaded any new filters recently. I got away from FF for awhile because I hit a bit of a wall in my imagination and found myself just inventing new versions of my old filters rather than coming up with new ideas. I am hoping that FF3 will inspire me to find new directions in creation. I worked this image with a couple of filters I never uploaded. I don't like doing that because I believe in the community and believe folks should contribute what they produce to keep the community alive. These are filters that were too much like other filters of mine, but I find somewhat useful at times. First I used a filter that is similar to my Fake Buzz filter. This changed the texture and color and made the background even darker and more ominous. Then I used a filter similar to my Texture Board Paint filter. I have said before if you use different noise sources in that filter you can get lots of variations. I made one with a bunch of noise nodes and did a big mixture of them. It creates a weathered scratched and scared effect. No, I did not mean for the dude to look scary. I wanted him to look kinda scared, like he just ran into something strange in a dark spooky place.

This a bit overdone. I can't help it, sometimes I get carried away. I used my Color Corrode filter to get some extra color and texture into the image. Then I used my new favorite filter, Carl's Drawranged. I don't know what he intended this filter for, but I find many uses for it. It makes things kinda raggedy, and I like that a lot. I had to screen lighten things up a bit and then added my altered version of Kraellin's Frosty Morning Window. I added a little more color control to the edges so I could make the image look like a tile. Kraellin told me it was cool with him to do this because he had already got his points for the filter. I don't like messing with other folk's filters. This is another spooky face attempt.
