i dare not quit
well, the nature of this thing is a 'multi-filter'. and it's never been finished. my definition of multi-filter is that it's NOT a one effect type filter. it's an anything goes type filter. when i hit 'next variation' i never have any clue what might be coming up next. it's truly just a plug it in and see what comes up type.
the monster does have one rule, however. it must use an image and must be such that the image doesnt become too obscured by the effect. and that's really the only rule. the number of controls is unimportant. ease of use is unimportant, especially since i mostly just hit 'next variant' to produce the effects. number of presets is unimportant; i save tons of them. in fact, in this filter, the presets are king. that's how i find effects i've used and liked in the past, but even more so in this behemoth than in other, normal filters. like that last image i posted here. that's now a preset.
so, all of my multi-filters are somewhat this way. they are experimentation filters. and i rarely throw anything out on one of these. some effect may look horrible on a newly loaded image, but the preset may have been made for a specific image that is now long gone. but, that effect stays nonetheless.
it's actually an interesting exercise in seeing what FF can do and i'd recommend anyone doing at least one. the basics are simple. set up a switch and add more switches to that. then just fill in the sub-switch nodes with various effects. or, if you're really brave, substitute multi-blends for the switches
i've spawned off several filters from my multi's and will be doing more. in fact, i've actually started on doing a series from the monster. the first one is already almost done. i think i named it 'monster's spawn #1' or something like that If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!

Yeah, that's what I've come to like about it. You were right, Photoshop can already do the selection and masking.....so why re-do it. For me and my work, I love the draw of the unexpected and unpredictable. For example, some of Carl's filters are very unpredictable.....and users seem to love that about them.....so I think that this approach would work for the "Monster" filters as well.....with all kinds of crazy selection methods.....
I was also thinking that combining filters for the "Monster" would alleviate your 'enfringement' concerns.....like using your combination of my "ElectroGlo" with your "Church" filter. Just about every one of my filters can be plugged into other filters for new viable effects.....so pillage away.....and should have 500 new filters before you know it Steve

yup. i think that's what i like about them too, the unexpected 'wow' you get every once in a while.
and yes, the infringement thing is still a bit of an inhibition with me, despite folks like yourself and volde saying 'go for it'. it took me years to NOT shamelessly rip off other's works and it just seems like going backwards on that now to take someone else's work and use it with my own
anyways, 'monster spawn 1' is now submitted If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!

That's cool....metallic noise speckling!!!
One more thing.....combining two effects with threshold along with the "Monster" selections would yeild all kinds of dramatic unpredictable effects.....the crazier the better.....and I for one would love it..... Steve

EUREKA!!! There you go!!! Combining Volde's filters with mine would be perfect.....Volde does very little color and texture.....and all of mine are all about color and texture.....so they would make a perfect marriage together under the Monster's scambling selection methods!!! You wouldn't be able to tell where the filter came from at all!!!

Do one effect on 'high' and the other on 'low' with the straight image as the source.....or combine both before threshold as the source.....then add the Monster's selection on either end.....and you would have the "Mutha" of unpredictable filters!!!

hmmm, interesting idea. i might try that. the 2nd way i'm not so sure about, but maybe. the other thing about combining other's filters is that, it's really easy. so, i dont ever feel like i've authored anything, so why take credit
and yes, yours and volde's might make for really interesting effects. dilla's and uber's and volde's and yours....now there's something i'd like to see might be fun just to see what comes up If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!

Yeah, several different ways to experiment with.....there's those two ways.....or blend the two effects, use as threshold source, image with effect #1 into low, image with effect #2 into high, then use Monster selection to apply threshold amount of final effect to original image.....all kinds of ways to experiment with it.....and actually sounds like alot of fun to make Steve

here's the third in the series of monster spawns. this one uses a wave curve as the primary filtration. you'll notice that there's a similarity between these three filters. this is mostly due to the one rule i mentioned for 'the monster', to not obscure the image too much. a few go a bit futhers, but these first in the series are going to be somewhat similar.
so, this one isnt so much a noise filter as it is a curves filter. it does alter tones a bit, but mostly it adds a pattern that is variable. If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!

and this is from the fourth in the series. i just submitted it. this one is also a curves filter and is more for altering color tones. this one also includes a relief heighten control for when you want more or less depth/roughness/texture in an image.
