Ghislaine, I think you will enjoy it. You just grab, push, pull and smooth the clay and things just start to appear. It's good therapy after a hard days work if nothing else.
![]() Gene sorry we are over here having a roaring good time in your gallery. Hope you don't throw us all out. ![]() ![]() |

Hey guys you are making me crazy here ... I'm not used to all these comments, and I'm not to good at communicating on line. (I don't even know what those funny little smilies and dancing bannas mean. I'm kinda slow and I have been working with computers since 1969 on a Univac 1004)
Carl, I think I led you astray on 3D software. I did some testing earlier tonight and I think the best software for what you want is either Bryce or Poser. Poser has a material room where you can add your own texture and bumps. Bryce is even better but more complicated. Poser is easier but it is not free. But, you don't need a recent version. Mine is an old one that I bought used and Daz is still offering Bryce free for a couple more days. Morgantao ... I've tried Zbrush as well but it runs as if it was designed by a committee. I have too simple a mind to do complicated. Mardar ... Thank you very much for your kind words about my tikis. I need weird folks, 'cause that is the only audience I have. (The New York Times article on FF and my tikis generated 500 new hits to my site in one day and it still didn't increase my sales. Not enough weird folks in the world) Everyone ... Keep playing with Sculptris, but I must warn you it can be harder to kick than heroine. |

Sorry we freaked you out last night. I was in a silly mood yesterday, and was having way too much fun.
![]() I ordered two t-shirts from your site last night. The "older than dirt" and the " you don't have to be pretty.." one. I could resist them no more. Those Tikis are just wonderful! You are right about not enough weird people in the world. Everyone seems to be cut out from cookie cutters. That is sad, because I find the weird, off the beaten path kind of people are so much more interesting. They tend to be deep and artistic and they always show me the world through different eyes. I love that. ![]() Thanks for putting up with this weird old lady. ![]() |

Mardar ... Don't be sorry about checking in on my thread. It's nice to know there are folks out there having so much fun with graphic software. I have checked our your website and I get the feeling you been loving creating for a very long time, and all your stuff is super fun and creative.
Thanks so much for purchasing my t-shirts. Those were early attempts of making tikis for me. I was told on another forum by a guy who is supposed to be an expert on the subject, that those are not very authenic tikis. The nose is supposed to be flatter and the shape is not quite right. You actually came pretty close to what is called a PNG tiki on your second sculpt. The tongue sticking out is a common trait of both New Guinea and New Zealand natives. It is a way of warriors taunting each other. If you find a problem with your shirts please let me know. Cafepress is usually really good about their products. I would appreciate feedback though. Thanks again ...... Gene |

I used Bryce on the first sphere. It takes a little more work but there are some good tutorials on line on the subject. There are lots of options. I did not resize which may have made things look a little better. How the pattern is laid down depends on the size and resolution of the surface texture. The program makes a bump map based on the image you input. I think you can add your own bump if you need a different depth. I used a pretty harsh overhead sunlight on it.

On this one I used Poser. It has a pretty simple material room which is quick, so you can experiment a lot. It will also create it's own bumps, but I couldn't get very good depth control. It might work better with your own bump map. I used two bulb like lights. I don't know if either of these are what you are looking for. Hope it helped some. I'm not too good with 3D. I only use it when I have to.

![]() Thank you for the kind words on my sculpted images, they are so fun to make. As I stated in my other post to you, I have loved old sculptures forever. So I am familiar with this sort of thing. Gene, I looked at both your Bryce and Poser examples, and I have to say I can't see any bump on either... Perhaps it's just a matter of tweaking the settings a little, or uploading a custom bump map.
Another thing I thought is that maybe Sketchup could be a simple way to test textures. It's free, and there are tons of plugins for it. Some plugins make it look more like a proper 3D render, rather than a simple Sketchup render. Sketchup is super simple to use, and looking at the online basic tutorials will show you everything you need to know in order to make simple forms. |

Morgantao .... You are right, I don't see a lot of bump in my spheres either. We really need someone who understands this stuff a lot better than I ever will to chime in here. I know more is possible because I have used these types of programs in my work before using built in textures and the results have been really cool. I used your Ball Pit filter as a texture on a box. When I upped the bump I got strange flat plateaus instead of domes as I hoped. I faked it by using Indigo Ray's Fake Surface Snippet filter.

![]() OH, this is very beautiful, like how you have used the ball pit texture to make that cube even if it does not have any bump map, I think that in this example looks better without the bumpmap, because it is like a gift wrapping paper. By the way when looking at your cube this way it reminds me of a box full of Smarties candies ![]() 3D TEXTURED BALL WITH INUJIMA´s FILTER If you want to have a 3D ball wrapped with your own textures without the bump map, you do not need perhaps a 3D software, you can use the very good and well done filter by Inujima Spherical Projection Here is an example I have made with the Gene popcorn filter and then wrapped to a sphere using the Inujima filter. ![]() |

SpaceRay pointed me to Inujima's Spherical Projection filter. I was surprised I had not found it before. It is fun to use it and see patterns wrapped around the ball, and I found something else I really liked about it. I started with a tile I had created with a program I had written in Visual Basic.

Inujima's filter wraps your pattern around a ball, but can also unwrap it. When you do that you get a super cool abstract design. I think he has invented a new artform. In my day I knew some folks would have smoked some funny cigarettes and stared at is saying .... "Wow groovy man!!!"

When I uploaded my Digital Impressionism filter to the library I was not sure of it's value to other folks. It was one of several filters I have been working on lately that are designed to produce effects that are not imitations of painting styles, but original computer impressionism. Mardar of course made some examples which used the filter in a way I never thought of. This first example uses it on Mardar's Peace and Love filter. I have been fooling with cartooning. I like pattern backgrounds in my cartoons. (Like I use in much of my other work) Cartoons over patterns make images that are a bit too busy. Using my Digital Impressionism on the background changes the character of the pattern just enough to allow the cartoon figures to stand out. Thanks much to Mardar for this smart idea …..

This image was inspired my Chachah's DEAR VICTORIA image in the galley thread. Vicky never looked so good. It is very hard to get 3D models to look real. So the the answer to that problem is to stop trying. So I turned Vicky into an impressionist computer pixel painting with my Digital Impressionism filter. The important thing for me was to not abstract too much, so I applied the filter twice at different settings and then fade them back in Photo Shop. Then I added a touch of Daccat's HDR Lighting filter and faded it back as well. Then I shined a flashlight in her face in Photo Shop to make it the center of attention. Not as good as Chachah's but I kinda like it.

Gene, my Peace and Love looks fantastic and very cartoony without distracting from your great cartoon figures.
![]() Your island photo is a perfect example of impressionism. The little dots are just right, and the color is spot on. My hubby thought it was a painting. He couldn't believe it was a photo with a filter applied. Claude Monet wouldn't believe it either! ![]() ![]() Vicky is a dreamy doll. She turned out beautiful. Great lighting on her face. |

Mardar ... Thank you very much for your kind words. I wasn't worrying about the Peace and Love pattern distracting, I just needed it to look different from my cartoons. They do that kind of thing in animation to bring focus to the action. Impressionism is the art I love most. It is very nice to hear that think I'm actually accomplishing what I have been trying to do ......

I have mentioned before I have an attention span problem. I am doing one kind of thing one minute and something completely different the next. I know nothing about 3D stuff but keep trying. Poser and Daz makes some stuff easier. This is "Grunge Girl".(Lots of folks seem to love that stuff and I just like making things messy) This was just an excuse to use my Popcorn Stitch Crochet filter to make a sweater like effect. This young girls top and shorts has that filter results tiled for a surface material. The background is Ghislaine's GF Cosmic Clouds filter with my Multi-Style Carve filter used on it for some emboss. Of course there is also a bunch of grunge added.

Mardar ... Hope I can focus long enough to finish this .... (Squirrel!!!! OOPS ... To late)
OK, one more girly shot. Just wanted to show how I have used a couple more of my texture filters. I make these filters because I like using patterns and textures in my work. I have always loved the art of Gustav Glimt. His art had so much rich busy pattern as part of it's design. I do not pretend I do anything remotely like his but I think his influence shows at least a little in what I do. Thses are 3D model works. The background of this one uses my Alien Ice Storm filter.(It is the first preset. I created this filter to be used just as I have here) Her shiny red outfit has a tiled version of my Strings Of Color filter as a material. I love that while these filters are very useful to me as uased as I designed them to be, other folks have found very creative ways to use them as well ...
