Waiting for Guild Wars 2, figured I'd make something useful. I present 2 days of boredom:
![]() ![]() What do you think? Submitted, hope to see it up in a few days! |

Looks pretty good, but the hair may need some tweaking.
It looks somewhat... Hazy. |

The hair was hard to implement. I'm surprised I was able to implement it as good as I did. Even managed to give each hair a very soft shadow.
Ideally, I'd like to make the hair look more defined, I just don't know how to do it. If you have any suggestions, let me know. Here's the file so you can look through it: http://9us.us/hswh_beta.zip One of the hardest things was blending the hair onto the skin layer. I can't even make dark tone skin, if I do then the hair disappears, probably because of the multiply mode. I'm sure if I fiddled with it long enough i'd figure it out. Not sure I want to spend all week making it though. If you have pointers I don't mind modifying it though. |

IRL, the darker the skin tone, the darker the hair is too. It's true to a point though, and if the skin is dark enough, you simply don't see the hair much. I will take a look at the filter you've posted, but I'm not exactly a genius FFer. Maybe we can get one of the real masters take a look too, and give you some helpful pointers ![]() |

OK, I think I see the problem.
You need to blend the hair (and it's shadow) with the skin right at the end of the filter. Right now, you have it set that you blend the hair with the skin, then start changing hue\saturation\brighness\contrast for the skin. That also changes the hair, which makes it look unnatural. Blend the hair with the skin as a last step, and then the hair will keep it's appearance as you want it. Another tip I can share, you have a couple of perlin noise components with almost the exact same settings. You can just use just one, then manipulate the output, it will be faster than making the filter calculate the noise twice. In this specific filter it would also eliminate the need for two noise distortion components. Look at the image, and see what I mean. ![]() |

Thanks for the tips Morgantao!
I followed your suggestions and implemented the changes. The result looks a bit better now, with less complexity in the build. Also managed to throw in a 'Hair roughness' setting, for those who dare to create Robin Williams hair. I have yet to fiddle with the presets now, but with these changes I could probably make a better range of skin tones with matching hair colors than I could before. I have uploaded the current build, if you could take a look at it again. If you have any additional thoughts on how to improve this, please let me know. Thanks! http://9us.us/HS3.zip |

I can't seem to be able to extract the zip file...
![]() Try uploading it again. BTW, you can just upload the FFXML file on the forum, no need to zip it ![]() |

Looks better now.
Only thing you might want to consider, is limiting some of the sliders with remappers, for example hair length - it doesn't look like hair anymore on 100% length. Then again, if you change the hair color to red or blue it then looks like veins ![]() |

Could you explain remappers to me?

You can limit the values of controls with them. In the control you check "use remapping" and then you will see little thingys with values popping up where the control is plugged into the component. Simply click on that and tweak the values.

Been working hard on it. Still not happy with the hair. It just looks so out of place. Some strands are way too thick. The skin looks gorgeous now though.
Any ideas to approach making hair better? |

Take a look at Indigo Ray's Grass V8 filter:
http://www.filterforge.com/filters/10270.html See if that gives you an idea how to make the hair look better. |

Would it be possible to get a screencap of how his filter is made? |

Yep, here's the part that makes the grass strands.
The rest of the filter deals with making the soil. http://postimage.org/image/jsvm8v9g7/full/ |

How did he make the first Threshold transparent?
Also, I need more of the image for context. Specifically how the curve works out at the end. If you could help me with that I'd appreciate it! |

You can make the threshold transparent by selecting either high or low (depending on your needs) and setting the alpha on the color menu to 0.
And what do you mean how the curve works out at the end? Everything that is out of the image is almost the same as you see, but with brown colors for the soil and alot more condensed. What you see in the bomber is all the grass, and that blend to the far right is actually the end result of the filter. |

Can you show me a image of the three boxes to the right? The Rectangle/Offsets. I have the blades of grass working, but how to get them to random around and stuff, no clue.

Update:
http://www.filterforge.com/filters/10900-v1.html The hair looks so much better now. I guess to finalize it I'd want to include dimples somehow, very subtle where each hair is touching the skin. Sounds really complex though. Maybe the same Bomber as the hair, but with a small darkish/whiteish circle. The current bomber I'm using won't allow me to increase the density any higher due to the inputs. If someone has the time, could you check that out? I want to be able to go super hairy, but I can't due to this limitation. Highest it goes is 5. Thanks for all the help so far guys! ![]() |

And heer's how I did it:
Instead of putting the small hairs into the bomber and then scaling a portion of the bomber output, I scale the hairs so they are bigger from the beginning, then feed them to the bomber ![]() |

Here's the filter after a bit of editing.
Note that I've added a Hair Zoom slider, so you can make the hairs look bigger or smaller compared to the skin. This is just so it will be easier to dial in the correct hair size you need, as I have changed all the scaling of your original filter. I also took the liberty to clean up some of the needlessly repeated components. Human Skin with More Hair.ffxml |

Excellent job, thank you very much! I'll add your fix in the credits. EDIT: Submitted the filter after a few tweaks to the skin and new presets. Added your name and link to your filters.
I have a question though, how does the filter look, even just the skin itself? I can understand the slight bit of reflectivity might be exaggerated, but overall, is it appealing? I plan on modifying the 'grooves' in the skin, and giving a slider. This way people can make harsher areas like your knuckles, and smoother areas for arms etc. |

I guess if you ask 100 people what they think of the filter, you'll get 20 different answers. It all boils down to individual taste.
I myself find the filter quite appealing, and it could be usefull for 3D modeling and such. Too bad I can't do 3D though ![]() If you look at the library, you will find some subjects have many different filters, each one is a different style or interpretation of the same subject. Each filter has it's own look, and you never know when your filter is just what an artist was looking for ![]() BTW, thanks for the credits, but I do this because I like to help ![]() |
