Thought I would post this to get some opinions on the look of this. Been thinking about the Wood Burning filter that I posted about in another post. Heres that so far.

All right first off the wood looks awesome
but
""""This is not meant to slam you only an opinion I wouldnt express it except I know your one of the few that could pull it off --lets face it your a notch above folks like me as far as ability--so again not saying I dont think it rocks --it does
but
unless such an engraveing is laser done and controle by a computer such burn engravings tend to suffer from 3 things
1. irregularities in width
2. irregularities in depth
3. the result of the above forementioned causing slight shifts in the depth of the black color
You might want to add a rustic option and warn that it might slow down render times
but again wood is spot on and the engraving is excelent I would just maybe add the rustic option if I where you lets all whine for a wine port

Hmm, I used to get wood burning kits for x-mas as a kid, like 2 or 3 a year sometimes, (hive-minded relatives), and the wood never looked that nice ha-ha. It seems like "inside" the black ring, a lighter wood ring might be more realistic-ish too, in addition to what volde suggested. Maybe I had bad woodburning technique (although I think it had more to do with the cheap-o wood pieces they included in the kits) but the burned part was on the edges of a sort of melted trench in the wood, and I'd swear I could always see lighter/bare wood in the very center of the burn line. I dunno how accurate you are going for ha-ha, because it would probably look better, or more profesional, without that center lighter colored wood line.

Funny thing about technical accuracy when reproducing things, a perfect copy is not always what looks/sounds "best". It all depends on what kind of look or sound you're going for. So yeah, it looks really good now, it could look more "real", or it could just be improved on in the direction it's going already too.

yup, that's a good wood grain there. and at first glance i like the burned effect. can you scale the burned part or alter it and if so, how much? If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!

As it is right now, the trench part I call it the "Valley" the width of that can be adjusted. The amount of wood in the valley that can be seen is also ajustable. Along with the actual image itself and the amount that is burned into the wood. Stupid things happen to computers for stupid reasons at stupid times!

thanks, CF. it's lookin good.
what i remember about those old wood burners was that as you burned, the grain or rings of the wood would burn at a different rate than the pulp part and that's what gave you that uneven look on the burn. this isnt a comment on the filter, btw; just some old memories If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!
