this is from a new filter i've been working on, 'Luminosity Masking'. i like this filter and it's perhaps the first where i've really gone from A to B to get the effect(s) i want and have it do what i want. a lot of my stuff has been just experimenting or finding something sort of cool and then putting it out in filter form. this one, i had the idea, made the filter, et voila'!

Can't wait for the first two...They both look way cool Kraellin
![]() That first one kinda looks like what I did with the hover and glow filter...That light just loooks so cool behind the image... The second one looks like a diluted water color mixed with a touch of paint.. The last one is...vibrant.. Stupid things happen to computers for stupid reasons at stupid times! |

thanks, guys. i appreciate it
![]() the hardest part was cutting over 100 presets down to 20. i hope i didnt cut the ones that made these images, but i might have ![]() basically, the filter works by splitting the luminance into two legs with two set alphas, one inverted and one not. so, you can pick either leg to be the mask, so to speak, and then alter the other leg or alter the 'mask'. most of the alteration is done on just one leg, however. i put in controls at one point on both legs and things just got too clunkly, so i removed those. the presets i ended up with may not be the best of what i originally had, but i decided to keep represetative presets rather than just the best of the best. if you've any ideas for improvements, i'll certainly listen. oh, and the filter is now submitted. If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!

C'est magnifique! I know what you mean about experimenting etc. I have yet to make a filter from scratch to do what I had in mind when I started. The Chilkat pic reminds me of vinyl shower curtains. ![]() Good work! Can't wait for the filter! ![]() Donna |

Kraellin, I've
I've been running into alot of that too....making a good preset, then ruining it by chopping off the parameters that created it ![]() Steve

hehehe, stevie. when i make a filter, i tend to test it and tweak it a LOT. on this one i had over 100 presets and had to cut that back to 20. so, chances are that one or more i used on those pictures got removed from the release version. but, i never use the release version at home. i always use the version before that that still has all my presets
![]() i've mentioned this before on the forums, but one day i'm hoping that the library will allow for uploading presets to a given filter. the limit of 20 on release is fine, but i love my presets and would like to be able to share them more or see what others have done. so, hopefully, somewhere down the road, we'll have that capability in the library, along with text filter downloads, lighting environment downloads and so on. in the meantime, i've been giving serious thought to doing something like this on my own. i have some web server software here that i could install and make a filter forge fan site and do some of this myself. i used to have some web pages installed on this thing, but when my computer blew up i never put it back. so, maybe... The flower looks like it almost has a type of grain on it — a nice texture.
The lady after that reminds me of classic, 32-color Amiga art. On one of those demo loader screens. ![]() I'm enjoying using Filter Forge to create http://torley.com/textures |

ah, hadnt thought of amiga art in a while. i still have my old amiga 2000. always loved that bouncing 3d ball/cube/sphere thing
![]() and yes, you can add some noise/grain with this filter, though that wasnt it's original function and isnt very satisfactory in that regard. If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!

I am intrigued with luminosity masking as described and used in Photoshop - see this excellent 7-part blog post from 2006:
http://goodlight.us/writing/luminosit...sks-1.html I have been wondering if this same technique could be done in FilterForge and then found this thread and Kraelin's "luminosity masking 4" filter posted in 2007. However it does not quite do what I thought - or I am not using/understanding it correctly. Can anyone tell me if Filter Forge is capable of separating luminance selections (up to 8 masks, from lights to darks) from an image? Thanks! -Allan |

I kinda skimmed the material but judging by what I read through, it's absolutely doable. You can possibly create more masks along the way as well. |

Thank you, Skybase! Your encouragement helps. Also glad that after 9 years this thread is still alive.
