i've just submitted the attached filter to the library. but, i submittted it without one feature i didnt know how to make. the filter simulates persian or exotic carpets. but i couldnt make a frilly edge, which is what i really wanted. you've seen these, a frill around the edge of a rug made of the cloth the rug is woven from, but it's all loose strands. so, i ended up just putting a more solid border on it.

if anyone has an idea on how to do this, i'd appreciate it.

well, i'm getting closer now. still a couple things to work out, like eliminating the corners and i'm also playing with making the area between the threads on the fringe, transparent. i'd also like the fringe to fade to transparent on the very outer edges.

As I stated in the filter comments, try modifying my "Disintergrator" filter....I chopped parameters off of the Noise Distortion that will give you the random, stringy, transparency effects for the fray.....then play with 'stretch' for the straightness.....

thanks, stevie. i did look at 'disintegrrator'. uber's works a bit better. it's the 'checker' component that makes his work. you have to get the fringe going on all the edges and in the right direction on each.

i just have to get some transparency into the thing and then mask out the corners. i played around with it some more yesterday and will play around more today.

ok, this wont show it correctly, since web postings and .jpgs dont save and use the alpha channel. the fringe is a lot more transparent than this, but it gives an idea. still not quite right, but i'm onto something now smile:)

Hey Kraellin, sorry for the confusion....what I meant to say is modify my "Disintegrator" filter on what Uber has given you (combine them)....should work nicely smile:)

thanks, steve. try this: wave > profile gradient > noise gradient. do this twice, two legs. set the profile gradients one at rotate 90 and one at rotate 180. have them both set on high repeat. set one of the noise gradients to 'vertical'. and set the waves to a high, even frequency. that's what i'm using to generate the fringe lines.

ok, i've worked out the transparent corners thanks to some dim memory of someone else here doing something similar. sorry, i'd give credit to them if i could remember who.

but in doing the corners i've screwed something else up. lol. but i feel i'm closer.

unfortunately, this now has to be a square image since i used profile gradients to get the transparent corners. and again, since web pics dont use the alpha channel, i had to put this on a background image to show the corners now missing the fringe.
