I guess I got hooked on a rock texture groove from working on my last filter. Here's something I'm working on now:

It's a very good concept.....definitely worth exploring everything you can get out of it..... Steve

I'm trying to work in some rounded stones too. I originally wanted to make a sort of 'conglomerate' type of rock, with several types of rock in varying colors... but for now I'm focusing on individual rock types. (I was a geology fan as a child, so I guess it has really stuck with me. )

this looks good, capn. and yeah, lots of rock possibilities seem possible in FF. not sure how you'd do the rounded ones and the conglomerate, but was also thinking along the lines of conglomerates. i wonder how many 'stones' components you could add before your computer exploded and came back with a message, 'hey, i'm not a quarry here!'. If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!

I've been playing with stretched 'cells' noise for that, but it is difficult to get just a few, isolated cells. I've tried various combinations with perlin noise, in an effort to 'thin out' the cells, but haven't been happy with the results yet. (This is one of those times I wish FF had a "sparse convolution" noise type.)

yeah, cells might give the rounded, but like you say, tough to isolate. try the stones. you might be able to curve the edges there by isolating the mortar lines and then distorting them and offsettting them and then putting them back. not sure. or maybe a cells combined with a stones. tricky stuff at times. If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!
