The white background is *transparent*. Are the designs too simple ? Is the metal flecked look alright ? Anyone, anyone, Bueller, Bueller ?

LOL..... I think they look pretty good and the simple designs are very usable..... smile8)

I would just bring out the relief of the bars a little more.....and add varying textures to them.....maybe even a little grunge and rust..... smile:devil:

Love the first 2, hate the second 2 - why - if they are what the title of the thread states - the first 2 are more convincing as grates to me, maybe it's only the texture finish on the 2nd lot is lifeless, and the design of the first two is more gothic in nature smile:)

----Well, fair enough on the first part as the 2nd 2 have no 'surface texture' added. I would tend to somewhat disagree about the 2nd 2 not having a 'gawthic design', but I can also see them not being any more and possibly less 'gawthy' than the 1st 2, so no arguement to be had really ha-ha. smile:D

----Thanks again for looking and the comments all, more grates or whatever, tomorrow. smile:)

I like them. Simple can be a good thing smile:)
One and two look good for a very simple style, 3 and 4 would work good for something more ornate.

these are cool, jffe. iron grates, lattice work, gazebo lattice, iron bars (as in prison windows/doors), some good uses here. i could see #3 and 4 as wood grain, also.

----There ya go, that's how I was seeing them, but apparently we have some texture/non-texture biased people here ha-ha smile:D

----Thanks, and ya confused me there for a second, but then I recalled some wild cutout wooden cabinet doors from some movie, and I think I know what you meant. smile:)

----Thanks all for the comments. smile:) Overall, I don't have a preferrence, but I was pretty happy with the flecked metal look myself, I wanted something kind of different than the usual perlin noise surface stuff I'd seen, so there ya go. smile:D

yup! you got it. there's actually a LOT of those you could do and have a real world application for them. wood design like that isnt that uncommon. it's used like you said and for room dividers and partitions and other things like that. i used to work with that stuff and i'm somewhat surprised at myself for not doing a filter like yours already smile:)

----Hmm, ya know, I've not been too thrilled with the 'wood' filters I've seen on FF, I even did a boring hardwood finish one that went LU and I dumped. I think it would take the right kind of wood texture to make it work with the more intricate patterns. Yer way ahead of me though, good eye. smile:p

I can see wood looking good [ even churchy type stuff ] but I can see your point of intricate stuff just looking brown - worth a try smile:)

I never got around to the wood grain part yet, was messing with tire treads for a week there, but touching up the 'gawthic grates' a bit today.

Thanks all, minor adjustments to the kaleidescope seemed to help quite a bit. smile:) The kalediescope is both amazing, and cheesy at the same time, and it's not too friendly when ya give it too much control ha-ha, it's best hardwired most of the time it seems.

I agree.....it's definitely a pain to try to create more than one control parameter.....alot of time-consuming trial and error.....

I think these grates are really good.....very interesting patterns and detail flares.....I haven't seen anything like them before...... smile8)

Using 2 kaleidescopes, or offsets and kaleidescopes is quite the unfun and time consuming experience control/adjustment wise, but, it is about the only way to get away, from that typical/boring/overused FF kaleidescope look. Hopefully they'll give us a few more different kaleidescopes with FF V2. smile:)
