So, I took Mortex (by Morphed) and pimped it out a little bit to make it look more like a spaceship hull or a city or something. Added some windows (for scale) and a few other techy touches, like small detail lines. Made a separate culling pass for the windows so they appear semi-asymmetric. Added a switch for multiple noise modes, so Techno and Pyramids is in there in addition to Blocks noise. Also added some options for profiles, so you can do curves.

Would like to improve:
1) I'd like to add a secondary layer of fine detail, with pipes and other such greeble within the major 'chunks'. (If anyone knows of a good way to make pipes, let me know.
2) Would also like to add a way to make render out a 'lights' channel for use in 3d programs. (Using specular exponent doesn't work well enough.)
3) Would like to add a control to change change between Horizontal symmetry, and the other Kaleidoscope modes.
4) Need to add a control to limit the 'roughness' and to make sure that it's applied more uniformly (Problems w/ high and low end of bump scale.)

Note on #1 and #3 how the windows are quasi-symmetrical: they sort of follow the pattern, but not quite. There are also controls for how 'high' on the structure the windows appear, and how many repetitions. There are also x and y offset controls for the noise, so you can tweak them into new configurations.

So, here's what you can do with this sort of texture in, say a 3d program with displacement. Note that the texture used is the default Mortex preset. These items objects are primitives: ie your basic spheres, cylinders, boxes. ALL the shape comes from the texture. (the three in the lower right are exceptions: they are letters.)

And then put together into a little scene. Note that the big sphere really is just a basic sphere, but using displacement from texture #3 above. (Antennae are added.)

Here's a detail for the ship in the image above, but zoomed in a bit and under different lighting. Note the use of texture #1. The underlying geometry here is a capsule, having about ~100 polys. (hoses and antennae I added.) Look at all that groovy detail!

Looks fantastic. I love the mortex filter, it's the inspiration behind one of mine.

Cool stuff Corvus!
at least 90 percent of all sensation is texture, even beyond the visual, with elements of noise, tone, gradients, interval and degree.

Ah, now I know what the image reminded me of: it's the look of hand painted Space Fleet miniatures!

Try googling 'space fleet'. BTW, Space Fleet is/was a table-top board game published by Games Workshop... smile:)

Hey, thanks for all the encouragement everyone. Once I polish this up some more I'll submit it. It's still VERY slow.

Yeah, that's the sort of thing I was going for, but less organic - looking. More massive - looking; Like a painting by Sparth or John Harris.

Are you a tabletop gamer 'dilla?

I used tp play lots of Games Workshop (and other) tabletop games back in the days... like Space Fleet, Space Hulk, Blood Bowl, Advanced Hero Quest, etc. I was also an avid tabletop-miniature-collector and -painter. We even had a Blood Bowl league going for several years... smile:)

OK, I'm submitting it. (My very first submitted filter. Woot!) It's VERY slow, so be forewarned! I would appreciate any tips on if there are ways to speed it up / more correctly construct it. I'm sure there are ways I'm doing things inefficiently.

There are still a lot of things I would like to improve it:
1)Get a whole second 'layer' of greeble underneath the panels.
2)Would like add more 'plating' effects. Perhaps
3)Would like to get some better looking paint patterns going on. Perhaps more of a 3-color thing, more based on the windows patterns, which are pretty good.
4)Need to have the windows be able to be rotated 90 degrees to vertical.
5)Need to switch the noise stretch to be rotated 90 degrees to vertical.

'Dilla, I'm calling it 'SpaceHulk', in honor of the classic tabletop game.
