I am back playing around in FF. Here is a preview and work in progress of the lace filter I am working on. All comments are welcome
Wip 1
Rendered on a black background so you can see the lace better.

those are delightful, lynn smile:)

curious, though, why is the lace itself so grainy and can that be removed and what does it look like when rendered in very large image sizes?

hi lynn,

still looks grainy to me. incredible look, overall. what about adding a slight blur to the white to reduce the noise/grain?

I have a slight blur to the white on the 4 renders I posted, will be working on get rid of grainy look to it. Did you click on the renders to see them in a bigger size?
Thank yo very much for your help.

hi lynn,

yes, i always open up the posted pictures to full size smile:)

yep, definitely less grain now. nice smile:)

one last thing that's been buggin me on this one. the depth of the lace itself. i'm attaching a pic to show what i mean. is this a surface filter and can you reduce the depth? if not, i doubt many will complain smile:)

I made some changes when I rendered the red one. I change from an blend node to an mutiblend node if that make any sence to you. also decreased the surface height. might need to play around with the lighting more.

If you haven't forgotten how, I think the noise was very realistic, for it simulated the thread in the patterns. After you took it out It looks more like an alpha map generator and not real lace. The first 3 were amazing, but I would suggest turning down the brightness in the Lighting tab by about 33 or 50. smile:D

Violets are #0000FF

Thank you very much Betis. I still have the orginal filter that the first 3 came from. I made an ajustment to the lighting, does this look any better to you?
I tend to agree with you, the ones without the texture to me seems dead to me.

Yes! Those look great! and the lighting does look good. But now try stretching the noise by about 25 or 33, to look less like noise and more like the thread you were going for. I think this filter will go HU. smile:D

Looks great! I have another idea for realism. If it doesn't add more than a second to render times, add a small refract mapped from the inverse height, and apply it to the noise, can you post the filter? smile:)

I am not quite following you on the inverse height, not sure whate it is. Can you explain it to me in detail, thank you very much

take the heightmap, and invert it. Then use it as the Height input for Refraction.

Here's a different way you might understand:
a = Noise
b = Heightmap (inverted)
c = 4

Refraction Node:
Input input : a
Height input : b
Refraction input : c

I made the changes to the filter it added a few seconds to the render time, needs to do some trimmimg since the render time is 2 mintues and 18 seconds

I think it looks better, but that just might be my brain telling me that. Try turning any detail down by 25% to 50%, it will improve. If the refraction is adding too much, either put it further back in the filter tree, or just getting rid of I'll reply in the morning.

Maybe slightly less stretch IMO, but not necessary. Oh! How about make it a control? If it doesn't have too many already.

You are not nagging Betis, you have given me very helpfull advise to help bring this filter to live up to its fullest potential. I appericate all tha advise you have given me. I made a few minor changes to the filter, I gotten rid of all the node that were not really doing anything for the presets, I add another colr control, to help give it more relistic look, decrease the surface height, took out the small refract mapped from the inverse height to the noise for right now.
Render time is 1 minute and 25 seconds

Here is a sample of preset 9

ok, in looking for pictures on google of actual lace, in order to have something to compare to, i ran across this site: http://www.dezeen.com/2007/08/07/lace...makersvan/ . i love stuff like this smile:)

sorry, i'll quit hijacking now smile:)

it's looking very good, lynn. i'd say, at this point, that if you want to make sure it's as good as you want it and as good as it shld be and all that, that you find some real lace to study, or good pictures of lace and go from there. that's what i was doing when i found that site i just posted. it's kind of interesting that there arent many, if any, high resolution pictures on google of lace. you would think there would be. the other option, of course, is to just go out and buy some lace and study from that.

and dont read anything into all of that that i'm telling you your texture needs work. i'm not saying that at all. i'm saying that my memory of what good lace would look like, at this point, is a poor substitute for going and looking at the real thing to even see if you need to do more.

anyways, it's a delightful piece! smile:)
