Yep, done all those before.
SpaceRay, look at http://www.illustgarten.com/vector-art.html. All those images are actualy VECTORS!!! The bondage girl alone, for example, took him 82 hours if I remember correctly.

Google "illustrator gradient mesh" (both images and video) to see more amazing vector art, and how it's done (Hint: Painstakingly).

I did a project once where I needed a man in a suit standing over an open grave, and couldn't find a suitable stock image big enough for the size it was going to be printed, so eventualy I took a tiny photo from a mens wear catalog and did just the shoes and pants in gradient mesh. Unless they come up with a shorter way of doing it, I don't think I'll ever be doing that again... It's worse than a chinese torture.
