When I try to open a new filter I receive an error message "Cannot run Filter Forge – the program is already running". I am using a Photoshop plugin, so yes the program is running (I never had this problem on Windows). If I close the program, then FF tries to open in stand-alone version which does not recognize the license key I used for the plug in. How exactly can I download new filters.

You can Only have one FF running
Do you mean that when you are using Photoshop plugin and try to download a new filter from the filter library you get this message?
You can't use photoshop plugin when trying to download a new filter, as far as I know the filters can only be downloaded using the standalone version
So, if you have already open FF with photoshop (or any other host) you must first close it and use the standalone version to be able to download any new filter
The FF license is for the standalone version and the Photoshop plugin the same.
Then after you have downloaded it you can use it with photoshop if you want
When downloading a filter it will happen this 3 following things
1 - it will check first if is not being used as a plugin., or if FF standalone is already open and then will check if you are not inside the filter editor, so then it will use this one to download the filter
2 - If FF is not already open, it will then open the latest version you may have installed and download the filter. You may have different number versions in the same computer
3 - If you have different versions installed and do not want that the new downloaded filter is done on the latest version, then before trying to download the filter, you need to open the FF version you want previously.
This may be also if you have downloaded the trial, and it expired, so you can not use the latest version, so you need to open first the standalone version that you have the license
What version you have installed?
Do you have more than one version installed?
Maybe you have version 9 and the 10 trial?
