I've used FF for years on and off and something that really just bugs me to no end is the absolutely broken way that search is implemented within the app
How does it work? Who knows. Because it feels like I have to stand on one leg, hold my nose, do a little dance and sometimes I get a result.
I should just be able to, no matter what is previously selected in the interface, type into the search box and get a result. But that simply doesn't happen. And it hasn't happened since search was implemented back a long time ago!
I'm on FF9 right now, trying every conceivable way to get results and no matter where I'm clicking in the interface or library or anywhere, it acts like nothing is happening when I put in a search term in the box and hit enter.
I use the website to search for filters as fallback because it's so useless.
I use a lot of complex software, so I think, if I'm so bothered by this, how many others must be? It needs to be fixed.

I think that it searches through the filters that you already have installed. This could be useful if you can't remember what category a filter was in but not so useful if you want to search for a new filter to install.

Yes I know that. I have hundreds of filters installed. And when I say it doesn't work, it doesn't return a result that says "nothing found", it does absolutely nothing. Plus, no worthwhile UI/UX schema would force you to already know the category you are searching for in order to find it. But even that, which has worked for me in the past, only works sometimes, I don't know why, I don't know the special combo anymore because I couldn't even get that to work recently.
It just doesn't work. Not like it should, not like any user expects it to, not like any other search in any other program or website or anything works.

When I use FF9 or FF10 I do see the message "No results". If I type in a complete word that is in the name, description or keywords it finds that filter. It doesn't do a good job of partial matches, for example typing "fra" gives no matches but "frame" returns quite a few matches. I'm guessing that you've run into a bug that causes search to not work at all for the filters that you have installed. As you say even when it is working as designed it's not meeting expectations for how a search should work.

Thanks Chris. I'm searching the word "gold" which should return plenty of results and nothing. I should have specified that. Failing on a basic search term.
I've since looked a little deeper and from my basic testing it seems that when freshly opened search seems to work. But if the app has been open for awhile and you've clicked on various filters and categories and rummaged through, suddenly it's not responsive and doesn't give any result.
By the way, I don't want to sound negative, I have gotten a lot out of filter forge over the many years of use. This is a long time pet peeve that just filled the glass of annoyance with something I truly do get a lot of joy and value out of. I want to be able to find to effectively search within the app without haggling with it's peculiarities.
So to be clear there's 2 items going on:
1. UI/UX: fix search so it works like a common search experience a user should expect
2. bug: after enough actions have taken place, search is no longer responsive

As far as I know FF search inside the app ONLY search for full names of the filter and for all the keywords that the filters may have, so it will not work like Component Search inside the Filter editor that can search partially for names, you will only get a result if you put a full word, or full keyword that may be inside any of your filters. If a filter has more than one word, I think that it will work with just one of the included words and do not need to put the full name
