I was checking out the Featured Filters page and the last-selected one dates from Feb. 14, 2007! Looks like it's been awhile since one was chosen, altho looking even further back, it's true there've been even longer periods. Would still be nice to have regular — even weekly — picks to keep it fresh. Any word on whether this is feasible, with everything going on? smile:)

(This, in a tangential way, reinforces my wish for a Random tab, to assist with filter discovery!)

Editor's Picks are only awarded for filters that the editors deem to be of 'exceptional' quality. Applicability, usability, technical elegance, innovation, and what I'd call 'polish' also play into this.

As such, I doesn't seem surprising that EPs are awarded rarely. Something like a weekly quota would certainly reduce the importance of EPs, and I feel that would be a Bad Thing® for the Filter Library in general.

Hehe I think there's a consensus of the Filter Forge masters a-risin'!

@Crapadilla: Yeah, I'm not saying to force it to be weekly, but just in case if there's been any exceptionals that got missed, or forgotten, etc. Especially considering as the userbase grows a lot and there's going to be a lot more filters; but perhaps it'll be a lot harder to get an Editor's Pick (due to the overall quality of filters being noticeably higher than they are today).

In light of that, and since these are subjective choices, it'd be nice to have a few words from said editor of why a given filter was chosen. That lends depth into choices, can be useful to learn from — and fun!

It also isn't clear to me why the reverse-chronological ordered list @ http://www.filterforge.com/filters/ differs from the expanded view @ http://www.filterforge.com/filters/featured-page1.html

(Tangentially, would be nice to show the acceptance date of each filter on its own page too.)

^ Me too, which is why it reminds me of Second Life, how we used to have something called "Top Picks" chosen by staff (Lindens), but this eventually turned into "Popular Places" with a traffic system which hasn't served well to represent our diversity.

Beyond the usage ranks here tho, I'd like to see a more user-driven approach to highlighting filters, in addition to how user-driven making filters is.

Comments in the forums are a good start for voicing our opinions.

actually, we could start our own 'editor's picks' here in the forums. maybe we could get vlad to add another sub-forum for it. obviously, it wouldnt be editor picks, but you get the idea.

i suppose that might be somewhat redundant, though, what with having both a gallery forum and a filters forum. but still, no reason we couldnt use one or both of those.

does this forum do polls?

I think allowing users to nominate a filter for editors pick is a good idea.

Obviously, the former is sorted by usage rank, the latter by submission date. smile;)

Well, in my opinion there are a few filters that have been overlooked as well as a few that shouldn't be Editor's Picks at their current stage of refinement. But overall I tend to agree with the EPs awarded, and I feel the system serves its purpose well for the time being.

A better way to look for featured filters -- this page lists all of them with no rotation:

^ Thanks, I like that link — I just wish the dates were shown too (and for that matter, on each filter's own page of when it was accepted).
