Hi everybody,
Just bought filter forge standard version (really like some effects) and am playing around with it to get used to it. Now I've got a dumb question: when i open one of my photos in adobe photoshop and apply filter forge (located as plug-in under photoshop filters), i can apply a filter forge effect filter (for example grunge look) and it will apply to my photo. but if i open or download a pattern filter, only the pattern shows - I'm sort of used to working in layers - and don't see any button or whatever to use the pattern as a filter/layer on the photo. Does it mean that patterns, textures can be downloaded, and then have to be saved as a gif or tif on my pc and then i can open it under adobe and use it as a layer/pattern?? But that i cannot use the pattern as a layer whilst i'm in filter forge mode? thanks for help,(will probably post more often here ![]() Have a nice evening ![]() cheers, barbara |

hi barbara,
generally speaking filters like the grunge look are 'EFFECT' filters, which do get applied directly to another image. they create an effect on that image in some manner. pattern filters, mostly, are stand-alone TEXTURE type filters, which do not normally use another image. this is of course just in general for both of these types. there are some pattern filters which are also EFFECT filters. so, there's no hard rule on these. but generally it's like i say. when you open filter forge, you may have noticed that the listing of filters you have within FF are listed in the top left of the interface and are divided about half way down by a line. the filters in the top half are TEXTURE filters, which do not use any type of image import. the bottom half is all EFFECT filters, which, by definition, do use another image to create that effect upon. now, there are ways to use the TEXTURE filters in layers within photoshop and apply those textures to an image. you could use blend modes. you could make the image partially opaque. you could put the texture within the textures folder (i know paint shop pro has this, not real sure of photoshop) and apply the texture that way and i'm sure there are several other ways to use them with images, as well. hope that helps. If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!

Hi Craig,
Thanks for anwering ![]() ![]() Ok I got it, will download the textures, save them in my texture folder, and use them then in photoshop as a layer - (I thought i could use them as layers straight away). Another question: do i have to download every single filter that interests me one by one or is there somewhere a button that says : download all patterns/textures/filters in one go? with over 6609 filters thats a lot of manual downloading i will do. When I bought filter forge the receipt that was emailed to me said i also will get a CD. Will all filters be stored on this CD? It is a backup CD. What is on the CD? ![]() I'm still feeling my way around here, stayed up late last night to download some nice filters, but the thought struck me that maybe there is an easier way ![]() ![]() Have a nice day ![]() cheers, barbara |

The CD will contain a snapshot of the current filter collection, (got mine in a shelf somewhere).
I usually browse the web for the texture filters I currently search for, and make a bunch myself, that is the fun part ![]() ![]() - I never expected the Spanish inquisition |

Browsing by category is pretty useful, or just browse the popular list:
I've found a few really great ones I've missed before by just browsing. I cannot draw, not even a smiley without getting laughed at, so whatever I want to draw, if I can script it, code it or in another way make it happen it will happen ![]() - I never expected the Spanish inquisition |

You wouldn't want all 6000, just pick and choose the ones that look good. The browsing on this website is a lot more powerful than trying to locate things within filterforge itself. I'll sometimes not even bother trying to find a filter in filterforge and simply re-download it every time I need to use it. It's not like the files are very big, 200kb at most.
Also barmarhedhof, the difference between making a TEXTURE versus an EFFECT is simply whether or not you include the image component. You shouldn't discount your own ability to create filters. Read the "do and don't list" on the wiki and start looking at other people's filters. We all had to start somewhere. |

you can. read the options i posted again. just remember that TEXTURES are opaque. so, you can put them on a layer, but you wont see through them at all unless you turn down the opacity or use a blend mode or erase bits of it. If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!
