When I launch the stand alone app and go to Open it won't let me open a Photoshop file? I'm on a mac running Snow leopard 10.6.2 and using FF 1.018

You can AFAIK only open "real" image files with FilterForge.app. - I never expected the Spanish inquisition

Something without layers, just save your psd as a png or something else lossless (tga) and you'll be good to go.

Thank you, I though after all these years Photoshop was out that it would be considered a "Real Image".

One more question, can't I apply a filter to a selection? I mean if FF won't recognize a psd file with layers.

some filters have the selection feature, some dont. it has to be included within the editor of Filter Forge. however, FF shld work on the background just fine. in fact, it shld work on any raster layer. it will NOT work if you have an ajustment layer selected. at least, this is the case in paint shop pro. you may notice that with different layers selected, FF will be ghosted out or not depending on the type of layer it is. that's your clue as to how it will work and which ones will work. Thanks but I'm getting crashes if I apply it to another layer other than the background layer. It seems I need to have a selection active on the background layer which makes having a selection that you can't move.

OK I solved my selection on a transparent background issue. I didn't realize I could make a png file with a transparent back ground so then you really don't need to have a selection active to have FF applied to it. At 62 I'm a little slow but love the new technology.

Great you solved it!
You will have so much fun with FilterForge, I promise.
Feel free to ask again. This community is great and helpful, and we've all started out somewhere. I've only have had FilterForge for 4 month, so I still remember how it feels to be lost... - I never expected the Spanish inquisition

jamesr,
i can only tell you how it's been in the past, not what FF, inc. will do in the future. all new versions since 1.00 came out have been free. however, those have been minor upgrades. version 2.xx, when it is officially released is likely NOT going to be free as an upgrade. it's a major improvement and not a minor bug fix improvement. so, it's most likely going to NOT be free as an upgrade. and i have no way of saying whether there will be another minor upgrade, a 1.019 release, before the 2.xx release. likely not.
and all that being said, you could get in on the beta test for version 2.xx now and see all the new toys being incorporated into the program, though it doesnt appear, so far, that beta testers are going to get 2.xx for free for having tested it. If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!
