Vladimir stated that FF wants more 'mainstream' filters for their library. I have a suggestion by which to renew filtermaker incentive (like during the Beta period), and at the same time, FF can direct filtermakers to make the filters that they want.....
SUGGESTION: Filter Forge makes and posts a list of the filters they want for their library in groups/sets within catagories. Upon FF approving an author's completion of a group/set of filters, FF rewards the author with free lifetime updates to the software..... There would have to be some method of assignment to avoid authors working on the same set of filters..... Something like this may also give rise to collaborative efforts between authors.... Steve

Don't know what the FF team thinks about this, but I'd certainly love to see a new forum section specifically dedicated to 'official filter contests'. And maybe we could have 'community projects/challenges' as well.
IMO, there are plenty of 'themes' in the area of textures alone that could be made into official contests. If you take a look at the Genetica Texture Packs, you'll see that even seemingly boring categories such as 'bricks & blocks' or 'marble' hold a lot of potential for high quality filters... Anyway, my first suggestion for a community challenge is: PIZZA. May the best topping win! --- Crapadilla says: "Damn you, stupid redundant feature requests!" ;) |

here's a couple of ideas for filters, if someone wants to take up the challenge:
1. i got this idea when i made a filter, almost by mistake of 5 thin black lines on a white backdrop. how about a music notation filter? 2. i havent seen a plexiglass filter yet. 3. there are a TON of paper types out there. talk about a wealth of filter possibilities. 4. tar. 5. adobe (i've seen close, but never an actual adobe one) 6. here's one i'd like to see, mohair! 7. and how about fur! there's lots of types of furs. 8. did we do leather yet? coarse and fine? 9. we've done wood, but how about painted wood? 10. hard plastic, opaque, not transparent. low reflection. 11. pot metal. this is a particular type of metal, very grainy when you cut it open. i beileve it's made by high compression of powdered metal. 12. insulated wire and copper wire. coax cables and all that sort. 13. telephone poles shldnt be that hard. power line poles also, steel or wood. 14. bakelite. 15. fruit skins. i seem to recall one or two, but there's plenty of room for more types. banana comes to mind first. 16. had anyone done cardboard? If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!

I'd like a WATERMELON fruit skin — sounds like there could very well be a market for filter bounties!
I'm enjoying using Filter Forge to create http://torley.com/textures |

You'd have to ask Zephos, our resident watermelon expert.

Where was that? Anyway, coming back to the topic. I like Stevie's idea. The FF team should really come up with the challenges/contests to fill in the blanks of the library. After all, the average user wants usable and applicable stuff, and the challenges would provide incentive to develop some mainstream filters. And a free copy or lifelong upgrades for the winner would be an adequate prize... --- Crapadilla says: "Damn you, stupid redundant feature requests!" ;) |
