Hi Some time ago i spent 3 months solid learning Filter Forge when my trial period run out - during that time i designed and submitted 9 filters which were accepted and are being downloaded by users of Filter Forge. How long dose someone have to wait until there hard work etc is rewarded - or has FF made impossible to earn enough points these days to aquire a free copy.

a disapointed Mikita - who will never be able to purchase Filter Forge.

It can take as little as a month to get an HU, or as long as well, never, it depends on how useful your filters are to people. And ya gotta consider that the library has 5000+ filters in it now, ie = a lot of competition. If nothing else, sign up for beta testing the Mac version when it's out, or the Pc V2.0 If you can find some bugs for them to fix that is almost a shoe-in for a free copy (I say that because FF was very generous with the free copies to all the original beta testers of the program).

----Oh shoosh, we've agreed 1/2 a dozen times in the 2 years or so now of these forums ha-ha smile:p
----And speaking of filter promotions or whatever, I just allowed my usage stats to be sent (and always do, and always will) and just wanted encourage everyone to do so, so that the reward system does still work despite the tougher competition these days. smile:)

Exactly.....and the downside is that it's pushing new authors to either do variants of existing HU filters (like uuk did....) or throw anything and everything up against the wall in hopes that something will stick (like Ronjonie is doing....) in the hope of getting the HUs for the program.....

That's also 5000+ examples of what works and what doesn't! Look at what's been done and learn from it. Know your enemy, so to speak!

Personally, I have the feeling that it will get harder and harder to earn Rewards with effect filters, unless they feature some really novel concept. With photorealistic texture filters on the other hand, the field is still wide open!

Hi guys - thanks for all your replys -
So really the bottom line is - to learn FF in the 3 trial months plus design a couple of filters good enough to earn HUs etc is probably impossible these days and a new comer to FF really hasn't a hope in hell of obtaing a free copy of the program.
It also looks as if it was a lot easier when the program was first launched. When FF was on the hunt for filters.
In the mean time FF keep the filters one has designed and adds them to the 5000+ in their libary. (Clever)

Incedntly i did uncover 2 bugs in the trial program that i was using, which crahed FF and lost the filter you were working on - reported both along with actions to FF but never got an awknowledgment from them.

Ah well never mind i will still keep looking at the new filers added by you guys each week plus keep adding FF to my christmas wish list.

Thanks again for all your comments - Mikita

----It depends really. As recently as what, 6 or so months ago I know we had a couple of new folks who got busy and earned their free copy in 3 months or less. If you are starting from scratch not knowing squat about graphics, then you are probably not going to get good enough in 3 months time to make HU filters (or at least it will take 6-12 months for your filters to go HU, and not all do of course). But there's still lots of things left to be done in FF, and if you can do 3 of those things then you will get those HU awards.

Hard to know......would depend on knowing how the number of users has grown and usage stat patterns in comparison to the number of filters.....

Yeah, I think there is a growing problem with new authors not knowing that it is getting tougher to obtain HUs.....

Those are part of one "Bastard Bug" (aka - resource leak issue).....which hopefully will be resolved soon..... smile;) smile:D

You can also contact FF and ask for demo time extensions.....I believe they will give you up to 90 days of extra time.....if you ask them nicely..... smile;) smile:D

Hard to know without looking at the stats.....but it seems like alot more variant texture filters are being produced and diluting each other's usage than that of effect filters.....and looking at the most popular filters, effect filters seem to make up the 'lion's share' of the most used filters here.....

It would be very interesting to see the stats on this stuff..... smile:devil:

don't give up hope! i'm not very active here anymore, but i played with FF for a little while last year. i put a total of 54 filters out there, and in one year more than a quarter of them have gone HU. i got my first 3 in just under 3 months, so it does take time, but it's definitely still possible to get a free copy (or two, or three!)

as for using the current HUs to help you aim - well i think it's absolutely unpredictable what will go HU and what won't. some of my least favorite submissions, ones i considered having removed, went HU, while some of my favorites went totally unnoticed and are now Low. there's no accounting for taste!

I think Mikita has used that extra time already.

Am thinking now it will just be a waiting game Mikita to see if your lucky to get any HU's or not. Best bet might be to do what jffe mentioned and see if they need testers for the new versions.
Nothing wrong with a little insanity ;)
