Okay... so my copy of FF will continue to function no matter what, right? This is good. |
yes.

Okay... so when version 2 comes out (apparently very soon), |
as far as i know, the beta on the mac version isnt even finished yet. thus, the coding of version 2.xx may or not have even started yet. and i wouldnt project version 2.xx taking any shorter than two years to make. that's just a rough guess and entirely a guess, so dont take that as truth. it's just my guess. maybe they've already got half of it done, but i seriously doubt it and with all the wish list items that we've asked for and they are already planning, it might well longer than two years.

I will no longer be able to submit filters, should I choose to... because they wouldn't work with the new version. This is not so good. |
i think you've got that one wrong, but again, that's just a guess. i see no reason why filters made with version 1.xx wouldnt work with version 2.xx. it's the filters made with ver. 2.xx that are likely not to work in ver. 1.xx. so, there really shld be no reason why you couldnt continue to submit filters... i would think.
if FF, inc. keeps to their current policy, when ver. 2.xx goes into beta testing, FF, inc. will offer folks the chance to help test. the reward for finding and submitting bugs from that testing has been, in the past, a free copy of the program being tested. this is fairly standard practice in beta testing. so, there's a chance there to earn the program. after it's out of beta and now settled in as the standard program, it's likely that FF, inc. will again offer the 30 day demo. but again, that's all my guesswork, so, your questions shld really be answered by FF, inc. if you're that concerned about it. i'm just telling you how it's been in the past and therefore, somewhat likely it will be similar in the future, but that's again, just a guess.
as for the 2.xx version upgrade costing money, i would assume so. normally, an upgrade copy is significantly cheaper than the current full version, however. in other words, if 1.xx is currently $300, then the UPGRADE to 2.xx would be something quite lower than that. but, if you already have 1.xx and want to get 2.xx free, then you're going to have to do the beta testing, wait to cash in your three HU's until after ver 2.xx comes out, or get five more HU's for your lifetime reward, or find a rich uncle.
remember, if you get your lifetime now, ver. 2.xx will be free to you and so would every version after that. thus, you could cash in your three HU's now, submit more filters and get your five more HU's before ver 2.xx comes out and get ver 2.xx for free. or, you could wait to cash in your three HU's and use them to get ver. 2.xx, if it still only takes three HU's to get the program.
but, you shld understand that ALL OF THIS is only my speculation. this is NOT official in any way. i may have it all wrong. i do believe there is some official stuff that vladimir has mentioned in the forums, but i wont try to quote any of that without knowing exactly where those threads are. so, a search might be in order.
but, bottom line, if you get 1.xx, yes, your version will continue to function regardless of however many other versions get produced. as for the libraries, i would think you could still submit to and receive from the library, all compatible 1.xx filters, but that's not necessarily a given, but i cant imagine vlad suddenly just cutting all l.xx users off from the 1.xx library. that would be fairly nuts.
If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!
