I was told in another thread "you won't be able to download any new filters if your version of FF isn't up-to-date. "
Filters I previously downloaded won't work in the new Demo. So I understand that I have to keep upgrading the product for the filters to work or to download new ones...how much does the upgrade cost? I have to keep spending money (buy upgrade every time a new version comes out) in order to use this product..is that correct?

no, these upgrades, currently, are free. look for a cost upgrade when we hit version 2.xx.

also, if you have the demo only and not the demo with a product key giving you a full version, then the demo does expire after 30 days. so, be sure your demo has not expired. that could be the reason you cant download the upgrade and subsequently, more filters.

I have the full working version and it works fine ....but as was said I can't download any new filters..so I hit the upgrade button and it downloaded the latest version and installed it and then went back to a Demo version that won't accept my Reg info...

and did you re-enter your product key? that shld be possible and shld make it work again. if you cant do that or have already done that and it still doesnt work, then i'd guess your copy is corrupted somehow, possibly from the upgrade, a bad download maybe. i'd try re-installing in that case or contacting FF, inc. through their email contact form found here on the forums.

So... does this mean that, now that I have waited like 3 YEARS to finally obtain the 3 HUs I needed for a free copy of FF... it's STILL not going to be free?

I haven't been able to use the software all this time... and now you're telling me I won't be able to use it AGAIN if I claim my points?

Is it not bad enough that I've given up my IP rights to these filters and everything made with them? I've seen textures made with my filters being sold in the virtual world of "Second Life" in a ton of locations... (and textures made with the filters of other contributors here as well, actually)... and now, because I couldn't afford it in the first place, I'm STILL going to be the only one not able to use my own creations?

I do hope someone can explain this to me. smile:?:

capn, i dont have any idea why you're reading what you're reading into this. the above is one person's problem with downloading and installing the 1.015 upgrade. most of the rest of us downloaded and installed this free upgrade just fine and a lot of us have 'free' copies, too and the upgrade works just fine... without cost. so, i really dont know how you're assuming what you seem to be assuming. if you have 3 HU's, go turn them in, get your new product key sent to you, install the demo (if you dont already have it) and enter your new product key. it shld then become the full Pro version that is good from now until whenever.

do not confuse these small upgrades (ver 1.xx) to be anything but small, free upgrades. when FF does come out with a version 2.xx, yes, that will probably require a fee to upgrade to, but it certainly will not nullify your current version. you do NOT need the five extra HU's to get the little 1.xx free upgrades at all. ok?

Okay... before I use up my 3 very hard won HUs... let me get this as straight as I can...

Okay... so my copy of FF will continue to function no matter what, right? This is good.

Okay... so when version 2 comes out (apparently very soon), I will no longer be able to submit filters, should I choose to... because they wouldn't work with the new version. This is not so good.

While I'm not exactly jumping for a chance to submit more material in an attempt to gain those other 5 HUs... I'm really just curious: does that mean version 2 will be yet another time-limited trial, should a person choose? Or... does this mean anyone wanting to upgrade will have to pay for it regardless?

I'm really just curious, because I can't see a huge incentive to pay for the upgrade just to try to gain the additional HUs... since paying for it really negates the purpose of worrying about HUs anyway... lol smile:-p

So I assume there will be some sort of trial version of v2.0 available, meaning you can try to get those 5 HUs in 30 days or whatever... which, as I found out with the first version, wasn't even possible in terms of one single HU.

Oh well. As long as I know my version will continue to function, I'm fine. All I ever wanted was a tool to make my own textures.

as far as i know, the beta on the mac version isnt even finished yet. thus, the coding of version 2.xx may or not have even started yet. and i wouldnt project version 2.xx taking any shorter than two years to make. that's just a rough guess and entirely a guess, so dont take that as truth. it's just my guess. maybe they've already got half of it done, but i seriously doubt it and with all the wish list items that we've asked for and they are already planning, it might well longer than two years.

i think you've got that one wrong, but again, that's just a guess. i see no reason why filters made with version 1.xx wouldnt work with version 2.xx. it's the filters made with ver. 2.xx that are likely not to work in ver. 1.xx. so, there really shld be no reason why you couldnt continue to submit filters... i would think.

if FF, inc. keeps to their current policy, when ver. 2.xx goes into beta testing, FF, inc. will offer folks the chance to help test. the reward for finding and submitting bugs from that testing has been, in the past, a free copy of the program being tested. this is fairly standard practice in beta testing. so, there's a chance there to earn the program. after it's out of beta and now settled in as the standard program, it's likely that FF, inc. will again offer the 30 day demo. but again, that's all my guesswork, so, your questions shld really be answered by FF, inc. if you're that concerned about it. i'm just telling you how it's been in the past and therefore, somewhat likely it will be similar in the future, but that's again, just a guess.

as for the 2.xx version upgrade costing money, i would assume so. normally, an upgrade copy is significantly cheaper than the current full version, however. in other words, if 1.xx is currently $300, then the UPGRADE to 2.xx would be something quite lower than that. but, if you already have 1.xx and want to get 2.xx free, then you're going to have to do the beta testing, wait to cash in your three HU's until after ver 2.xx comes out, or get five more HU's for your lifetime reward, or find a rich uncle.

remember, if you get your lifetime now, ver. 2.xx will be free to you and so would every version after that. thus, you could cash in your three HU's now, submit more filters and get your five more HU's before ver 2.xx comes out and get ver 2.xx for free. or, you could wait to cash in your three HU's and use them to get ver. 2.xx, if it still only takes three HU's to get the program.

but, you shld understand that ALL OF THIS is only my speculation. this is NOT official in any way. i may have it all wrong. i do believe there is some official stuff that vladimir has mentioned in the forums, but i wont try to quote any of that without knowing exactly where those threads are. so, a search might be in order.

but, bottom line, if you get 1.xx, yes, your version will continue to function regardless of however many other versions get produced. as for the libraries, i would think you could still submit to and receive from the library, all compatible 1.xx filters, but that's not necessarily a given, but i cant imagine vlad suddenly just cutting all l.xx users off from the 1.xx library. that would be fairly nuts.

We definitely don't want to spend 2 years on it -- we want it to be out in a less than a year. We'll be very aggressive (in a 80/20 way) regarding its feature list. Our policy regarding releasing betas will change from our usual perfectionism to "sloppier but faster".

Regarding the policies in general, expect changes. Some of the things we're considering are quite drastic -- I'll discuss them later, after we're into development of version 2.0 (which is already underway).

Filter Forge filters will be backward compatible. Everything you created with 1.0 will work in 2.0 (not the other way around), and you'll be able to submit filters from version 1.0, and owners of 2.0 will be able to use them.

Of course it will continue to function, no matter how many upgrades and future versions we release.

well, that's good news, indeed. i had to be conservative there, not having a clue at what you all are looking at timewise. and given the length of the wishlist, that was also entering into matters. but then, i again have little idea of what on the wishlist that will actually be implemented in the next version, so again, being converstive here seemed the wiser choice/guess. and that version 2 is already underway... freakin cool smile:)

thanks, vlad!
