I own a Microsoft PS2 wheel mouse which is working correctly.

In FF version 1.003 it worked fine. I could use the wheel to zoom in and out in the main window and the editor window.

In V1.004 things have changed. smile:cry:

Zooming in is no problem but zooming out has become very hit and miss.

Something has changed in V1.004 and V1.003 was much better.

If this is a bug then I hope it gets fixed. If it is not a bug then I am wanting scroll bars in the editor to navigate the workspace.

Did I mention that the speed increase in V1.004 is amazing? smile:loveff:

That's very strange -- we haven't changed the Zoom Out behavior, and everything works perfectly fine on all of our machines. We have several different flavors of Logitech mice (both optical and mechanical), a couple of Microsoft ones, and some A4s -- all work perfectly well.

1. Could you please describe the problem in greater detail?

2. Could you describe the difference between 1.003 and 1.004 in this regard?

3. Does your mouse wheel work fine in other applications? For example, when you're scrolling a long web page up and down?

4. Did you install any extra drivers or software that modifies the default behavior of the mouse wheel?

5. What is the exact model of your Microsoft mouse? (We can buy one to see if it works).

and just as a note, mine works perfectly fine, same as in 1.003. so, sounds like a local thing.

if you've got another mouse, try it. could be the wheel switch is going bad.

Hi Vladimir

I noticed this problem as soon as I downloaded V1.004. But I have waited till now before mentioning it while I checked my mouse and settings.

My mouse is working perfectly in every other program and it used to work perfectly in V1.003. I have installed no other software.

The wheel works perfectly when I pull it back the problem is only when I push it forward. See picture. This problem is the same in the main and the editor windows.

I tried Tool>Options>Invert Mouse Wheel when Zooming.

This does not help. It just means I can zoom out rather than zoom in.

Pulling the mouse wheel in works perfectly every time. Pushing the mouse wheel out works about one time in thirty tries. It seems to help if I push the wheel out very slowly taking care not to push it down.

I am sure something has changed in V1.004

The mouse in the picture is similar to mine but I could not find an exact match. I think my mouse is older than the one shown. It bulges higher where your palm sits and it is bent round a little.
It is listed in System properties as a PS/2 Compatible Mouse. I have Roll the wheel one notch to scroll 3 lines at a time.
On the back of the mouse it says
Intellimouse 1.1A PS/2 Compatible
Product ID 63618-OEM

I have another mouse that I could try but I would prefer to stick with this one.

Hope this Helps.

PS.
After a google search on the product code I did find a picture of my mouse on Ebay.
Does anyone know a mouse testing program? Just to make sure.

Ken.

Ken, the problem is caused by the mouse driver. Have you tried to update it?

Hi Vladimir

I have now plugged in my spare USB Optical mouse and it works perfectly so this is looking like driver problem. However it is still strange that I had no problems with V1.003 or any other program. Also these drivers were installed by XP and I have never changed them.

I checked the drivers
C\Windows\system32\DRIVERS\i8042prt.sys
C\Windows\system32\DRIVERS\mouclass.sys

Both these drivers are version
5.1.2600.2180(xpsp_sp2_rtm040803-2158)

It is on IRQ 12 with no conflicts.

So I created a restore point and ran the update wizard but it could not find a better driver.

What do I do now?
I would really like to keep this mouse. I know it is old but I have never found another one that I like.

Unfortunately, the drivers themselves (in terms of OS drivers) are 99% not guilty in this case. It could be some additional "software". Could you please post here the screenshots of your Start->Settings->Control Panel->Mouse tabs (yes, all of them)?

Hi OnyXMaster.

Thanks for looking into this

Is this enough? Or do you want the Properties tabs as well?

Ken.

It looks like the drivers definitely have nothing to do with it, after all.

This is what probably happens: when you push the wheel forward, it works like pressing the wheel button - either because you push it too hard, or because the mouse has become hypersensitive with age smile:), or (pardon the idea) because of the dirt that got into the mouse insides.

The reason why it happens in version 1.004 only, is that we've added right-button and wheel-button panning, and disabled scrolling while in Pan mode. So, when the wheel button is pressed it now works like pan, and the scrolling command (which is reserved for zooming) is ignored. In the next version, we'll allow mouse wheel zooming with pressed button.

For now the recommendation is - well, do try cleaning your mouse. It may help smile;)

Thanks Bella

I did clean my mouse before starting this thread.
I am also aware that this mouse has a very weak spring and has been hypersensitive from new.

I did mention above
“It seems to help if I push the wheel out very slowly taking care not to push it down.”

However. I have just stripped my mouse again paying more attention to the wheel. I also increased the spring pressure.

And now it’s working Perfectly. smile:)

Thanks for all your help and sorry to have bothered you all with this.

Have a Happy Halloween. smile:evil:
