This is my first posting, so forgive me if I am not doing it correctly.
I am using Windows 10 ... 21H2 OS Build 19044.1645.
I have FilterForge 9 and 10, I was very disappointed to find that 10 did not run as a plugin for my latest version of Photoshop 2022 (version 23.1.0) but I was told by tech support that it would run in the previous PS version 2021 (22.5.4), or as a standalone.
I wanted to download more filters by clicking on "filter library, download more filters" in FF9 in PS 2022, but no matter which filter I try, I get an error message which states I need a newer version of FF. (see attached downloading error.jpg) yet the filter itself tells me I need FF 4.0 or newer
So I closed down PS 2022, opened up 2021, tried same thing in both FF 9 and 10 and got same error. Closed down PS 2021.
Then I opened FF 10 as a standalone and same error again. Closed down FF.
Opened Photoshop 2022 again, and now I can't get Filter Forge to open at all, and Photoshop is frozen, I have to bring up the Task Manager to close it.
Then I tried opening the earlier version of Photoshop, Filter Forge tells me it is already running, and to click Alt and Tab to open it, which I do but the FF window doesn't open. Had to use Task Manager to close Photoshop.
SO... back to opening PS 2021 again, tried to open FF 10 again, this time I get a different error... see attached 01-FF 10 error in PS 2021.jpg... tells me to generate a Bug Report... which I clicked on and got another message... see attached 02-FF 10 error in PS 2021.jpg. I have sent the Bug Report.
This is SO FRUSTRATING... can anyone help, please ??
I have just tried to attach 3 jpgs but can only attach 1... no doubt you would have seen previously the message about needing a newer version to download a new filter, so I chose to attach the error requesting a Bug Report

Welcome to the fun.......First the error seems to be when an older version of FF is opened in Photoshop and is not compatible. This is the error you get. I have created a video of installing an older version. The installer does install FF but will not install the plug-in with newer versions of photoshop. So you will have to install the plug-in manually and then fix the error which is a minor thing. This is for FF8 but is the same for other versions.
There is no sound but I walk you though the steps. Here is the video OLDER VERSION

When downloading filters open the version of filter forge that you want to use first then download the filters. Windows will open the latest version of FF that you installed.

Win, welcome to the forums!

The error on your screenshot appears when you try to force-install Filter Forge into an unsupported Photoshop version. You may want to avoid doing that.

Re downloading filters: CFandM is correct. To download filters please open FF in the standalone mode, switch to your web browser and click the "Open in Filter Forge" button. After that, you can run FF as a plugin under a supported PS version and use the filters you have previously downloaded.

Thanks for the replies.
I have not yet done the steps in the video link posted by CFandM, I thought I would again try to download new filters as per GMM's instructions.
I have tried 10 times.. 5 with FF9 and 5 with FF10.
Firstly I opened FF 9 as standalone, clicked on "Filter Library. Download more filters" in upper right, browser takes me to the filters page. I selected one and and clicked on "Open in Filter Forge" and got the same old message about needing a newer version of FF and nothing downloaded.
So then I thought that maybe I shouldn't use the "Download more filters: button, so I reopened the FF filter page in the browser, logged in and clicked on a filter, clicked on "Open in FF"... same result... need a newer version. I tried a total of 5 different filters and none downloaded.
I repeated this same process with FF10... opened 10 as Standalone, used exactly the same techniques on 5 different filters with exactly the same result... nothing !!
If I open PS 2022, open an image then open Filter > Filter Forge 9, I can apply any of the built in filters, but can't download any more.
Same applies in PS 2021 with FF 9.
However if I open FF10 in PS 2021 and try to apply a filter to the default "lifesaver", I get an error message , similar but different number to my attachment in my first post. New message attached.
I thought I would be able to open an image that I have previously created in Photoshop, in to FF10 standalone and then apply one of the filters, but I can't find any way to do that. I can do that process in FF9.
I just discovered that if I open FF 10 Librarian, I can import filters in to FF10, but what's the use of that if I can't use FF10 at all.
I can not find FF10 anywhere in Program Files to uninstall it and start again.
FF9 is listed.

First lets work on one issue at a time....The updating issues may be due to versions of different numbers of updates of the application. Such as you have version 9a and the last version filter forge posted was 9b.....Then a filter author writes a filter with 9b. You try to download that filter using 9a and you need to update to 9b to use that filter so it puts you in a jam. So I will post a link to the latest versions of both 9 and 10. Download and install from these to have the latest. These are links to Filter Forge straight from the site.
Filter Forge 9
Filter Forge 10

If you go into the help menu and choose about you will find the version number you are running. It may say version 9b but there there is also a date of release.

Then the second issue is the error that you are getting. I do go over that in the video. It has to do with a non-compatible version of FF and photoshop. However this error can be reproduced in FF11 as well. Here I have done just that.

You can fix this going back to different versions, however far back you go you will get to a version that will not work correctly at all.
Such as some of the components and photoshop together. Selections and transparencies.
Version 1 though 7 I have not tried in this way.
It may also not be a supported version by Filter Forge if you fix it in this manner to use with the latest photoshop.
Also with each version of the plug-in you will need to fix it for each such as FF9 and FF10 if it does not work already.

Thanks for the answers. I did try to answer this last night, but my message wouldn't go through, trying again.
re downloading and installing the updated versions of FF 9 and 10. I did that and now neither FF 9 or 10 will open at all as a filter in either PS 2021 or 2022, prior to the downloads FF9 opened in both. Now I get the message about internal error and generate a bug report.
However there is one improvement, in that by opening both FF 9 and 10 as a standalone, I can now download filters.
I feel I have gone one step forward and two steps backwards.
If I open FF9 and FF10 as a standalone, I can open an image and apply filters. However I much prefer to be able to use them as filters inside Photoshop. I know that FF10 won't appear as a filter in PS 2022, but it should appear and work in PS 2021
My next step is to go back and watch again the video that CFandM supplied the link for and see if it will help my situation.
I won't be able to do it tonight, it is almost 1.30 am and I need to be able to concentrate !!
Be patient with me, I'll get back to you.

Glad you can now download filters again. That was only the first issue. Sometimes it does feel like that but sometimes you have to take a step back and look in a different direction... smile;) smile:)
Now getting the plug-ins to use in Photoshop again is what is in the video. Quick review, find where the filter forge application installed and open the folder.
Look in the plugin directory and find the x64 plugin. Copy the plug-in and config file to the plugins folder of photoshop. You will need to create a folder named whatever version of filter forge you are copying.

Then open that and copy the filter plugin and config file there....

The filter forge config file needs to be changed (very small change) so move that file from the photoshop plugin folder to the desktop and change it. Then put it back in the photoshops plugin folder and you should be good.....Its in the video..... smile:)

I've done so many tests my head is spinning... lol.
This is where I am at the moment...
1... In Photoshop 2021, after changing the config files, Filter Forge 9 now works as a plugin.
However Filter Forge 10, despite making the config change for it, does not work as a plugin. It gives the same old internal error, with a different number each time I attempt it.
2... in Photoshop 2022, after changing the config files, Filter Forge 9 now works as.a plugin.
Of course Filter Forge 10 doesn't work.
3... both FF 9 and FF 10 work as standalone programs.
4... I can download filters in both FF 9 and FF 10 when operating as standalone.
I just need to get FF 10 to work as a plugin in PS 2021, and I will be really happy ...
Thanks for the excellent help so far... any suggestion re getting FF 10 to work as a plugin in PS 2021??
It shows "true" in the config file.

You are welcome. Glad you got FF9 running and able to download once again. As far as FF10 and 2021 and 2022 Photoshop I will
take a look and see what I can come up with. Weird that 9 works but not 10. Although I was using Ps 2021 for a bit but there was a bug
in Ps that kept forgetting what video card I was running. So it would turn my monitor black and I had to hard reset the computer. I was not
alone and there was many people on the Adobe site talking about it...So I still use 2020 on the computer...Maybe I will update to 2022 and
hope they fixed that video bug...lol...

Thanks...
I will check the settings again tomorrow, but I'm sure that I have everything correct.
Just had a thought... this may be a totally different problem, but I get a message about some plugins not being installed when I open up PS 2022 (not that it would make any difference to the problem in 2021).
Screen shot attached.
Would you like me to send the System info just in case it could be making a difference?
If it has nothing to do with it, I'll open it as a new topic.
I'm off to bed.

Just installed PS2021 on the laptop to try this out. Filter Forge 10 installed fine and worked as it should.
So I would suggest not uninstalling FF10 but just finding the Ps2021 and 22 plugins folder and delete the Filter Forge 10 folder.
Then reinstall FF10 and see if it installs the plugins....

if that did not work then grab the plugin from the FF application folder as previous steps.

Then make a Filter Forge 10 folder in your Ps2021 plugins folder and edit the config file for this one...

Sorry, I didn't see your new instructions before I answered the last message.
I have done as you suggested but still can't get FF10 to work in PS 2021.
Looks like I'll have to be content to use it as a standalone.
Thanks again

YAYY !!! SUCCESS !! smile:)
I decided to give it one last go, and used Revo Uninstaller to remove all traces of FF10.
Then re-installed using the newest version that you had given me the link for.
Then I changed the config file, and (holding my breath) tested it in PS 2021 and it works... I can even download more filters from the FF window open in Photoshop.
I didn't attempt to add it to 2022, as I knew it wasn't designed to run as a plugin with that.
It works properly as a standalone, as well.
Now all I have to do is add some new filters as of curse it has only the built in ones after a new installation. But I think I'll do that at some other time, I'll give my poor brain a rest... lol.
Thanks SO MUCH for your help and patience, I really appreciate it. I am one happy lady !!

Thought about this for a minute. The dialog that pops up warns of plug-ins that are incompatible. Not installed properly, 32bit
or are manually installed. Even some plugins might not work with other plugins installed. So when you take your "rest" you could
test this. Since FF9 is not really "compatible" with Ps2022 it could be throwing up the dialog because FF9 is in the plugins folder.
So you could take FF9 out of the plugins folder and see if that dialog still pops up. If it does not pop up then you know it is that.
If it still pops up then you know it is something else.
Simply take the FF9 folder out of the Ps plugins folder and place it on the desktop or somewhere safe. Then open Ps and see if that dialog
comes back. Either way simply put that FF9 folder back into the Ps plugins folder to have FF9 work in Ps again.

Thanks for the suggestion... since it was an easy thing to do, I just tried it,but the error message came up as usual, so it isn't FF9.
I can do the same thing with other plugins I have... Nik and On1, so it may be easy to isolate... however, I couldn't find where On1 had installed, it turned out to be in Program Files > Common Files > Adobe > Plugins > CC, as well as something called DxO which appears to be be The Nik collection, which is already listed in the C > Program Files > Adobe > Photoshop 2022 > Plugins folder. Maybe having the 2 instances of it listed may be causing the trouble... some experimenting to do, after my "rest".
Thanks again.

That could be a possibility, that one instance loads and Ps sees the other one as not loading and puts up that
warning. Happy experimenting with it....

You are welcome just glad everything is good again. smile:) smile;)
