ok, it happened again. this is about the only crash i ever get any more with FF. and it generally only happens when i've been using a LOT of memory and possibly running into the swap file. not sure about the swap file, but it somewhat acted like it. i'll explain further in a bit.

ok, the sequence was something like this:

open FF, do some work, submitted a filter. done for a while but left FF running.

open browser, go to FF forums, post a notice or two, log out and go to retouchpro.com, log in, answer some posts and msgs.

go to art area of retouchpro, download some pictures to work on, open paint shop pro xi and do some work on several different images. post some pictures on retouch pro. answer more posts on retouchpro. log out and close browser.

FF has been sitting all this time doing nothing with it. i bring FF back to the front, click on button to go into editor, change my mind and click cancel. FF crashes and i get the normal error message (posted). only, when i click on it to send the bug report, it doesnt go away and browser doesnt open. but, the error number changes. i take a screenshot at this point. i then click again and same occurs with new error message. i do this 53 times, each time i get a new error message! and, it hasnt gone away yet and still no browser open.

at this point, i decide to free up some resources. i still have psp open. so, click on it to bring it forward and remove the image i have open. then i hit the close X at the top right. nothing happens. i hit it again and this time i get an error msg from psp saying 'program not responding. do i want to end it now'. i hit yes. psp closes and the harddrive light comes on and stays on, flashing madly as it seemingly cleans out the swap file. as this is going on, a message pops up asking if i'd like to send the report on psp to microsoft. i hit yes (i normally say no to these). and the MS report thing comes up and finishes.

i let the harddrive light slow down to almost nothing.

i now go back to FF and hit the still remaining bug report. i click it about twice more (about 54 times in all!) and it finally goes away for good.

i open psp back up and control v to copy the clipboard screenshot into psp and all seems well again.

the only thing untypical about this particular crash, is that this time there were 54 separate error messages. i could only capture one. they all had the same message (not sure about the first one) except for the last series of numbers; those were all different.

i do hope you guys can nail this one.

Kraellin, I've been getting the exact same thing all along. I've found that if you leave FF running, it continues to generate all kinds of unnecessary temporary files that start interfearing with your entire system. So far, the only remedy I've found is to frequently shut down FF, run cleanup utilities to get rid of all the temporary files, and restart FF with a clean slate. Sometimes it doesn't last long before you have to do it again, but it seems to be the only way to deal with it.....

I would suggest closing FF and cleaning out your system before getting into anything important in another program....better safe than sorry....

actually, after i canceled, i then tried to scroll through the list of filters in the GUI and THAT'S when it crashed.

stevie, it generates temp files while just sitting there? hmmm, where?

also, what cleanup utilities do you use? i used to know of one that flushed memory, but dont have it now. i think i might have a use for this again.

also, it shld be noted that once FF died and psp was killed, everything worked fine again, even without a reboot or any other utilities being used. psp loaded and worked fine. FF loaded and worked fine, both immediately after all this happened.

Exactly, It always comes back fine after closing, then the problems start all over again.

I usually use the system Disk Cleaner, then CCleaner (Crap Cleaner) or EasyCleaner, and if problems persist, I run Windows Registry Cleaner....

I am 1000% sure that it is coming from FF because it never happens on my system until I have FF running....

To see where all the files are being created....totally clean out everything with the mentioned programs....then only run FF for a while....then do a search for all files created from the date and time from right AFTER you cleaned out your system....

I'm still trying to figure out if linking to FF online is playing a part in this....

Since I'm hooked on using FF instead of using all my time programming with the SDK, these problems have made me become religeous with backups and restore points. I'm sure FF is aware of these problems with all the posts about them....and I'm sure it will all be worked out over time. FF really still is in the development stage of a great idea....

You're welcome smile:) I don't know how familiar you are with the 'Freeware Windows Registry Cleaner', but I would suggest using caution if you use settings beyond the default settings....because you can easily make that program 'overzealous' and change things that you don't want changed. If you do, it can create a restore point for you to go back to. The default settings have worked fine for me....

Just had a thought. Don't know if you are working in XP or not. Or if you had tried this. But if you turn off the "Indexing Services" for your hard drive that might help. Go to "My Computer"
right click on your "C" drive and veiw the properties. At the bottom should be a checkbox to turn this off...

Yes, I did that quite a while ago in an attempt to remedy the problem....

Have you experienced anything like this?
