The program crashed saying it was out of memory or something. When I relaunched it says the filter is invalid. I then looked at the ffxml file in notepad and its empty!

Good thing I remember how to remake it!

It sounds similar to that "resource leak bug" others have mentioned (where you get a "not enough resources" error of some type and the present filter you're working on turns into a 0 KB file...)

Been there - done that several times..... 0 bytes your filters. I've started to religeously keep a backup of the folder just in case of this.....

The other thing is that there are some tell-tail signs that it's about to happen.....mouse gets choppy.....rendering starts to crawl.....etc. Sometimes you can just close and restart FF and it goes away.....but usually have to clean out all the junk to get it back right....

It most surly is...I still wonder if this has to do with a certain combanation of components along with the leaky resources..

I think that this problem lies with FF's "adaptation" programming to the windows environment. Purchasing updated source code from Microsoft would undoubtedly fix this problem.....but would cost big $$$$....

i still maintain that this is most probably a windows bug and not so much an FF bug. XP is better than win98, but certainly not perfect and there's a LOT more stuff running in the background on xp. add in service packs, critical updates and anti-malware stuff and it's a wonder FF works at all smile:)

I strongly (and tactfully smile:) ) have to agree to dissagree about that one. I have alot of programs on my computer.....and EVERYTHING works fine except for Filter Forge....

The other thing is that all of my other programs run fine until I start and run into problems with Filter Forge.....and when FF starts having problems, everything else on my system starts having problems too.....so from what I am experiencing, there is absolutely no doubt that this problem is eminating from Filter Forge. It is a royal pain in the butt to deal with, but it doesn't seem to be doing any harm to my other programs. As mentioned, this problem can and will 0-byte your filters even if they are saved. From my experience, it usually 0-bytes the filter you have open when FF crashes.....

Until this ongoing problem gets worked out, I would strongly recommend fequently backing up the FF folder.....or set it up to be automatically backed up every 10 min or so while working in it. On XP, the FF folder is hidden in your 'Documents and Settings' folder.....so for those who don't know about it or can't find it, search your computer for "FilterForge" and it will come up. Better safe than sorry.....especially if you are working on something that can not be easily re-created.....
