Not much more than the title says, I just hate editing filters and saving only to find out I lost that carefully balanced default preset with the awesome global seed you'll never find again.
The reason this happens is because I'll start changing sliders to experiment and test an effect or some new nodes, and then I'll be satisfied so I go to save the filter and the default been overwritten without making sure with me. Roses are #FF0000
Violets are #0000FF
All my base are belong to you.

Sorry, that I do not understand.
If you are testing different setting and moving the sliders and you find a a good effect you like, you can go the presets tab inside filter editor and save it and so you will keep it when you save the filter.
You have to click on the "filter controls" in the "Results" component to be able to reach the presets tab to be able to save the preset you want.
If this is not what you mean, please could you explain it better ? Thanks.

For example, I may want to improve a certain effect that happens in preset 4. I go into the editor, open preset 4, and do my work. However when I'm satisfied and done, I save my filter, and now preset 4 has overwritten the default. Roses are #FF0000
Violets are #0000FF
All my base are belong to you.

Yep, you need to select UPDATE PRESET on preset 4, then load default preset, and only then save the filter.
If you forget to load the default preset before you save, it's game over man!

I'm exactly like you... I always remember a second after I save and exit the editor. Never a second before

As said by Morgantao very well, there is a missing very important set in this.
Here is the real text that you should do
I go into the editor
open preset 4, and do my work.
However when I'm satisfied and done I MUST CLICK ON PRESET 4 AND SELECT "UPDATE PRESET" to save and keep the work I have done, and then I save my filter
the PRESETs are not chained directly to the filter editor so they are not saved with the filter when you modify them and I think that I like it this way, and how is done now.

I have a note of paper pasted to the monitor to remind me that if Photoshop has an error you will loose all the work, so I can remember to save frequently to avoid a disaster happening.
Perhaps you could put a note, remember to click on update preset

Notes don't help me. After a few days the note becomes part of the scene, and I forget to look at it.... Maybe I need a note that will remind me to read the note

This happens the same to me TOO I have a white board in the back on the wall, and it seems that is like DECORATION instead of something where I have things to remember and is difficult that I put the attention on these.
Perhaps they could invent the neon lighted notes with animated flags "look at me, I am here to help you"
