I recently was wishing there was a way to lease filters to a client, and only that client for a limited time. Couldn't an ffxml file have a crypto block with these parameters? Inasmuch as the Filter Forge Trial program has at least this time limitation, couldn't ffxml files have the same? Another possibility is perhaps to put an ffxml file into a wrapper, to serve a specific FF filter for a specific time?

Well I was thinking of several things but nothing concrete....Besides anything inside the filter itself would increase the time to render unless its a fast filter...

I just never let my client handle any of my "working files" unless they pay extra for it. I keep the stance: I'll make you things as you ask. You make your own things. What's mine is mine. What's yours is yours. Break this rule, no business. You suffer consequences.

Essential rule of security.. There is no 100% proof way to do these things. And way too ofter these attempts (like DRM) do cause more harm to rightfull users than limit those who just don't care.
I kinda like the way FilterForge filters are .. without 1000+ filters, there would be not much point on product like FForge. With those premade and openly available filters, the product price becomes 'non-matter' Imho: If you ever want to limit the availability, Skybase has about the only valid idea.. as long as no-one has your stuff, it won't leak, or be copied or misused. |

With 'on-the-fly' encryption in programs like Truecrypt, it makes me think speed wouldn't necessarily be affected. And to only have it as an option for users, so that some files could be protected. FF Inc. would certainly have to disavow any liability for such a system, but maybe they can provide an open source way for us users to add custom security measures to files. But yeah, for the mean time, I'm with you Skybase.

An interesting idea, but it would create a 3rd tier of filters. There would be "private" filters", "lease" or encrypted filters, and the "free" open source filters (as long as you own the software, you can see the source from the trial version anyway). Given the way the world is, I suspect that someone would hack the leased filters anyway. I think the easiest way is to keep your own filters private if you are using it for your business. The never ending conflict... this flies in the face of the "open source" nature of FF. I'm a newbie, but I can see the conflict bubble beneath the surface in the various forum posts. Skybase is right, the "knowledge" is yours, it is up to you to keep it that way, at least for now.

humh.. I has another post to ths thread and apparently it's gone.. Ah well, rewrite. (Short version)
Truecrypt is no more. Original author has officially declared it Unsafe and recommended no-one to use (or even fork) it ever again. Most likely that would not affect this kind of low security stuff (as filters are) in any way. But imho it's good to know. http://truecrypt.sourceforge.net/ |
