The user has selected a filter for his photo. That filter has been applied to the photo in the display window. Now when one tries to browse through the other possible filters, just browsing causes that filter to start updating the photo.

In think this is not the optimal functionality. It slows down browsing and probably the user does not want the new filter to be applied to the photo as he might want to compare that filter to the currently applied filter.

Better would be to only apply the filter when the user requests it, say by double-clicking on it or by dragging that filter onto the photo.

It doesn't -- the rendering is done in a separate thread and the interface always remains responsve, ho matter how heavy the rendering is.

When you browse, the filter is not applied -- this is just a preview. The actuall "application" happens when you hit the Apply button.
