IMHO, the Smudge component is missing an option that determines whether or not the Trail itself is composited over the Source. I'd call it Composite Source, or something like that. Essentially, this would switch between two results: Trail OVER Source or Trail ONLY.
Consider the following example (image below): I'm currently building a godrays-style effect filter. What you see below is a Selection modulated with a Perlin Noise, transformed to polar coordinates, smudged, then transformed nack to cartesian coordinates. The problem is, I can't get rid of the selection and noise underneath the rays without destroying the rays (i.e. subtracting the Source doesn't work). ![]() ![]() --- Crapadilla says: "Damn you, stupid redundant feature requests!" ;) |

Two more examples: Again, I'd like my result to be the rays only, not the rim they were generated from...

As you can see below, subtracting the Source is not ideal. Take note of what happens to the rays on the inner ring and the 'rope part' on the outer ring.

Whaaaaat? No one else wants this?
Come on guys, play with Smudge and see! ![]() ![]() --- Crapadilla says: "Damn you, stupid redundant feature requests!" ;) |

Actually I'm surprised this option isn't available with the smudge component. Interesting results above though.

Very interesting subject. It would be good if it was included in a next update.

Smudge also shows some uncontrollable behavior when it comes to the transparency of the Source input. Examples below...
Smudge on a source with no transparency: ![]() --- Crapadilla says: "Damn you, stupid redundant feature requests!" ;) |

Again, what is missing is the option to not render the Source, like this:

Absolutely! The smudge component has so much potential already but would have even more possibilities with Crapadilla's suggestion.
