So once in a while we have not-so-cool, hyper opinionated threads that go flaming / political. It's not to my advantage to see those / read those topics and it's none of my business. While I can personally ignore them myself, these threads often get bumped up and end up in my eyes staring at me in the "recent forum posts" view. These posts are often "in your face", provocative, and counter-productive to the creative atmosphere of the community. It's also highly sensitive since the original poster is often frustrated at something and everybody else is also agitated by that.

While we all have legitimate reasons to be angry, frustrated, or annoyed at things in anything we use, it's certainly unhelpful when those topics end up being just super angry places with no solutions and nobody taking measure. These threads/users are often extremely difficult to unsee/hear. It's not like we can just close our eyes on them. So, while we have the power to post criticisms, anger, and frustration, we are powerless when we can't do anything about them.

This feature request / idea is that users just get an ignore button that silently ignores people/forum topics if there's a need to. It doesn't notify or provoke people. It's just intended to be a tool for us to escape irritation. Users can also unignore people if they so wish to. Sometimes people lighten up and become active members of the community. Ignored threads would basically be hidden so there would be no way to reply. Original posters won't be ignored if the thread's just ignored.

This feature request isn't intended to simply leave people floating around in an endless sea of silence, it's intended to just leave us out of our own misery of adding more oil to the fire. Nobody likes being ignored, but it's one way to unwind and cool down.

I can't say for sure how that would be handled, but as an example /ignore <username> is a command available on many IRC servers. Certain websites with forums do feature lists where you can just copy-paste user names and ignore. I can't find one that specifically ignores an entire thread. But either way, that would be a feature that'd ease tensions.

TL;DR: Angry threads aren't fun to be in. Why not a feature that helps us ignore those and focus on what's more important?

Also don't get me wrong, I've been thinking of this feature for years and I've never bothered to make a post about it until now.

+1. I completely agree. This is not a debating club or a place to put me down for not supporting a filter.

Let's make more interesting ones.

For example, even I wrote no answer there, this thread of Skybase ( Understanding RGB Math - Forum Edition ) was pleasant and interesting to read.

Rick Duim posted many nice answers to other people requests, also adding good filters examples. smile:)

I disagree. Or at least, if this feature was implemented, I would be only slightly annoyed, and I probably wouldn't use it. Given a choice of lesser evil, I would rather see a thread-ignore than a user-ignore. If FF goes ahead with this, I recommend graying-out threads rather than hiding them completely, and having an un-ignore function.

I'm not sure user-custom moderation is a good idea. These forums are already moderated to eliminate spam, and false/misleading information about FF. I do not feel a sense that some threads are "in-your-face". However, I would much rather see a silent user-custom ignore than a universal and non-silent feature such as Reddit's voting system.

On a related note, I don't use RSS/thread subscription, but I am fine with that feature.

That's what I mean. Not user based upvote, downvote, shadowban system that affects the whole thing. Just a silent, user-side, silent ignore function that doesn't affect stuff for everybody else.

This is an excellent suggestion. I'll check with our webmaster if our forum software could possibly support this.

Hey folks. smile:) I'm 62 years old and lived through the 60s in the "Good Old U S Of A". I was a foot soldier you might say in the struggle to end the war in Vietnam, The fight for civil rights, Women's rights, Gay rights etc. But the Establishment hated the whole movement and did some very nasty and unconstitutional things to stop it. So I'm very sensitive about censorship coming from the top. But DeviantArt has a way for a person to block a user from having access to there gallery or sending them messeges. So ya,I suppose I could go for somthing like that rather than a blanket policy coming from the manegment. smile:)

Yeup, deviantART's block user is basically what I'm talking about but it'll be silent and not as "in your face" as dA is. So basically the threads/users you ignore will basically be still visible to the rest of us anyway. And if you log out, you'll see everything as usual.

I'm really just talking about the 1% of the time that somebody just had a really bad experience and want their money back. We're not customer service and we don't have to say "I'm sorry for your bad experience."

I just think it's a kind gesture since that person is just looking for help and most often we don't have all the answers. I just don't want to leave them more things to think/get frustrated about than the answers they're looking for. Sometimes, those threads kinda leave a lot of sourness behind and to be honest, sometimes what I say on the internet keeps me awake at night.

And in the end, personally if I had this feature, I'll never use it against regular members / people who are just looking for help. The conversation here is 99% awesome, warm, and inviting. And it's just one of those forums I can come back to. So no way this feature request intended for malicious purposes and while it has a concern of being used that way, I don't think this group will have a problem.
