Heh, I can see the benefit of exploring this idea. With the default document, note that the size setting features a consistant area; you can render the same frame at any resolution. But, if you set a fractional size, you can get a render extending beyond the "default" frame. This exposes details you might want to "zoom" in on and set as new bounds for a higher resolution render of a different area within the "out of bounds" region.
There's something like this in the layout feature of World Machine, where you can "roam" over the infinite fractal plane and set new bounds at different world coordinates. So, this functionality would be a combination "dolly" and "zoom" capability similar to what you find in most fractal explorers.
I think that would be really handy. I mean, this is essentially what happens when you change the variation; the difference would be the ability to search visually through an expanded and compressed field. Much more interactive, but probably too slow depending on the render weight of the filter.
