The filter settings in FilterForge can sometimes get unorganized, especially when you are having plenty of them. When you edit and rearrange inside the editor, settings tend to 'fall down' at the end of the setting-list and it may take time to individually reorganize them again.

My suggestion is a simple system of Setting Categories for FilterForge.
Here are two illustrations I made to exemplify my ideas:

Inside Editing mode:

Outside Editing mode:

With Setting Categories, filter settings will now belong to specific categories:

0) - No Category (Default for old filters without this function)
1) - Category 1
2) - Category 2
3) - Category 3
... Etc...

Whenever a setting is manipulated in the editor, it may fall down at the end of its category, but not all the way to the bottom of the overall setting-list. Thus, it will be far easier to manage and re-organize one's settings when they are assigned to user-defined categories.

Benefits for the users are obvious - clear categories makes it easier to find the correct setting. Perhaps a function to 'fold' categories would also be helpful, so that categories which the user are not tempering with will not show up, except for the category name.

Result: Improved overview, functionality, organization and user-friendliness.

I like your mock-up. smile:) FF4 Beta adds the ability to group components, so grouping controls can't be that far away...

I think it makes sense to have these.

OH YES!! I agree much with this, and would be really helpful and useful to have a way to have groups inside the settings tab to separate filter settings I have already suggested this before in another thread.

Like much your mock-up, and would be a dream to have something like this.

Although this have been requested before but until now there is no news that this is going to happen

- separators between controls (via 'Order of Controls' form). (Considered)

Talking about "Order of Controls" in item p) above, it would be cool if in this pop-up we had also a button "Add line". So, if we click on it, it would add in the order list the word "SEPARATOR" or even a line "___________" and we would get to move up/down. I mean, a way to add division lines (separators) whenever we want to and get to order them. So, in the settings tab, it would show these separators. Well something like that;

Burt suggested also this same thing in 2010 here in this thread

For example a simple line/separator component that you could add and move with the "Order of Controls" to separate groups of controls. Or similarly maybe a 'frame' that could expand or collapse a group of controls. This could be useful for some filters that have a lot of component properties exposed to the user. So you might add all tiling options to one of these containers with title 'Tile Controls' and make the interface neater.

And in 2013 I suggested to also make groups of settings AND to be able to switch on/off each one of the groups as also would be useful and helpful Switch on/off or activate/desactivate settings inside Groups in FF 4.0

... didn't I just read some of these suggestions on another thread? Kinda have a case of duplicate posts!!

[Edit] for clarity: lol I think Spaceray left the same thing on 3 other posts. I'm being hyper sensitive to reposted material these days. I'm one of those people who get confused with recaps and reposts very often.

TLDR; it's a good suggestion.

Sorry, but this has not been a duplicated post and I have just put a reference to this thread and not have put the same thing, and as far as I know, I have only made it on just one and only post and not on 3 other posts, if I am wrong you could please, show the other two that I do not know.

I try not to make any duplicate post and put the same thing in two threads.

lol I think I was thrown around with the supporting suggestion threads and recaps. It... kinda happens when there are so many similar posts.

On that note I updated the wiki with this link.

I have a filter that have been making since some time ago, but have not been able to submit to the library because the setting will be confusing if they are all together, and even giving names specific would not work, the only way to avoid confusion would be this way shown here, I mean to be able to separate the settings

As I already said, this would be a very good thing to have

This was already suggested in 2013, and I think is a very good, useful and helpful idea, but there is no news about this in 2018.

I agree totally with you that it was a good suggestion but this was in 2013 and 7 years later in 2020 there is no news that this may be included and is really something that is not very difficult from my point of view and would help really very much to organize the settings and have a clean view of the different parts a filter may have

Yes, it would be nice.
For now I'm solving using a control and connecting it with an unused switch.
It appears like here:
