This has perhaps already been suggested as "Ability to set parameters of lighting controls and include with filter controls."
I'm thinking specifically of lamp angle/zenith inputs, though color would be important, too. An Angle control could lead to both a light component and a Smudge angle input, and this could simulate hard shadows, as explored here. Maybe these concepts could be combined into a single component? |

If could be handled as a slave/helper component of the Result, similar to the Image Width and Height components. You could imagine adding lights in the lighting tab, and then adding Light 1 Azimuth or Light 2 Altitude components in the editor... they would be references, not controls.
You are free to group a component tree (like in the filter you linked to) into a single component. Here's an example of hard shadows. I posted a point source light filter. |

You're right about creating a component group, but that doesn't actually solve the problem of the faked shadows being unpaired from the light direction. Moving the light would have no effect on the Smudge angle, which you'd need to adjust by hand. If precise shadow placement is important, dialing those angles in by hand might be frustrating.
