when one makes a 'surface' type filter, one gets the great lighting of HDRI. however, sometimes after making such a filter i'd like to be able to switch the HDRI off, much the same way you can turn off anti-aliasing and render map.

i could do this by going back into the editor and rearranging the filter, but that's so in-elegant. i could also make two versions of the same filter, one with HDRI and one without, but that's not a great solution either.

the simple solution (to us, the users (not the programmers) ), is to simply make a toggle on the user side where we can turn the HDRI off when wanted. this would only work if using a 'surface' and not a 'simple' type filter. in other words, i'm not asking that when i make a 'simple' filter than i could then toggle HDRI on. it would be nice, but i dont expect that.

A surface filter needs lighting to produce an image -- it would be completely black without lighting. Try to look at the floor in your room at night with all lights turned off smile:)

vladimir,

ok, i understand. so, here's another way to do it...maybe. within the editor itself, if you could add an option with a switch component, to change from 'simple' to 'surface' is what i'm looking for. in this way, back on the user side, you could switch the filter from 'simple' to 'surface and back again.

i've got one filter i made recently that this would be perfect on. sometimes i only need the speed of the simple filter and other times i want the more complex lighting features of the surface type. but, to get both ways currently i have to make two filters, one a simple and one a surface.

onyxmaster,

ok, i just tried the render maps -> diffuse. and yes, that does seem to do the trick. what's that do? does it basically just remove the height feature in the HDRI or what?

The short story:
Render Maps->Diffuse Map shows what's connected to the "Surface Color" of the Root component.

The long story:
The distinction between Surface and Simple filters are not only in availability of heightmap and lighting setup, but also in availability of extended Render Maps.

Simple filters have only "Off" (the default result) and "Alpha map[" (the transparency channel).
Surface filters have both "Off" and "Alpha Map" along with some others:
Diffuse Map - "Surface Color" input of the Root component
Bump Map - "Height" input of the Root component
Normal Map - a synthesized normal map, based on the "Height" input of the Root component
Specular Strength Map - "Reflectivity" input of the Root component
Specular Exponent Map - specular exponent, derived from "Reflection Blur" input of the Root component
Metallic Map - "Metallic" input of the Root component
