Layer integration would be the most usefull upgrade in our productions system. We process thousands of images a day. Most requires some kind of masking and compositing. If Filterforge could have nodes for layers and channesl already define inside photoshop than real control can be achieved along a much more ral world complete production cycle. What do you think?

Al, the biggest problem with layers is that Photoshop SDK 6.0 doesn't support them. Later Adobe SDKs do provide access to layers, however, these SDKs are for Adobe products only, which means we would have no support for non-Adobe software like PaintShop Pro, Corel PhotoPaint, Ulead PhotoImpact etc.
Actually, it is technically possible to include two plugins into Filter Forge installer, one built with an SDK that supports layers (to be installed for Adobe-only software) and the second one built on SDK 6.0 (to be installed for non-Adobe hosts). But last time I checked, the EULA for the new SDKs was just plain scary -- there were clauses like "Adobe can stop the distribution of your product that uses the SDK if it competes with Adobe's software". At that time, we definitely didn't want "to be bound by the terms of this Agreement". When we finish version 1.0, I'll look into this again with our legal counsel. As far as I know, all these clauses in the SDK EULA were implemented to fight competitors, with Macromedia being the biggest one. Now that they bought Macromedia, I believe they might want to relax the SDK EULA a bit. |
