So, something I think would be useful is an 'Extract Slope' green component. This would take an input heightmap, and return the vector / slope direction. This is essentially the same function as creates a normal map. FF can already do normal maps (and very quickly at that) so this shouldn't be very hard to include.

The resulting component can be used in all sorts of useful ways:
-Creating elements on one side of a shape, and not another. Such as windows on a hull, or trees on a particular side of a hill.
-Isolate individual faces of a shape: ie outline each triangle of a pyramid.
-Create directional wear, such as lichen on the top of a rock, or rust on top of a machine.
-Make more interesting shapes using existing FF components.

I realize you can do this by rendering out a normal map, and splitting out the RGB components, but it would open more possibilities to have it as part of a filter.

Seconded.
There's been several attempts made by the community to provide normal map calculation in-filter, but they're incredibly slow, prone to error, and not anywhere near normalized (by which I mean can be relied upon to produce values over the full tonal range).

It's incredibly fundamental to all sorts on interesting effects. For example, I've already used versions of it for nifty offset tricks and orienting Bomber particles to the contours of an image.

We. Need. This. smile;)

I've actually created such filters (for example, exact normal map smile;)) by using some beta 3 components. But the beta stage is not completed yet =(
